a: This was a clear, dark, ruby red color. It poured with a medium sized light mocha colored head.
s: Smokey malts and some sweet peats, not much else.
t: Sweet, floral, mildly peaty malts up front. The finish is dry and a bit thin.
m: Again, a bit thin, but decently carbonated.
d: Overall, this was okay. I just expect more from one of my favorite breweries.

this bottle was a gift from waldo567. Thanks dude!
I sampled the beer at cellar temp poured into a snifter. The beer pours a deep dark garnet and mahogany color with tightly packed beige head of 1 cm that fades gradually. Aroma is malty caramel and brown sugar, a bit of molasses in background, no hop presence to be detected.
first sip reveals an average body with smooth texture and very soft spacious carbonation. Flavor is sweet from the start with molasses and caramel and brown sugar with a bit of warm booze in the finish. A malt lovers beer for sure. The booze is also a little peppery bitter, but overall the beer goes down very easily especially for the ABV. QUite a nice product.

Bought a bottle of this from the brewery the other day after a fantastic tour and a good meal at Stoudt's Black Angus Restuarant.
The appereance was a very dark brown with hints of amber reds coming through little light with a good 1/2 inch or so of light tan foamy head. The head lasted for a minute or two and left so heavy lacing.
It smells of lots of smokey malts with some presence of alcohol, fruits, and maybe some caramel hints in there.
Taste is similar to the aromas with a lot of malty character with some sweet yet smokey flavors to it. Has a smooth bodied mouthfeel that makes it a very drinkable beer.

A corked and caged 765 mL dinner bottle purchased at the Brewery just before Christmas.
A: The ale is a deep tawny color, looking dark brown from a distance with ruby red highlights up close. A finger's worth of head emerged on the pour but the ale quickly settled down.
S: Nice and smoky, this malty ale has a smokehouse aroma that lingers just below the caramel malt notes.
T: This beer is a whopper taste-wise. The first sip reveals a Bamberger-like smokiness that, while strong, is not overwhelming. In fact, the peat smoking seems to have imparted a sea salt-like flavor. The smokiness seems to accentuate the rest of the malt body, bringing out a much needed grainy sweetness to relieve the mouth.
M: The mouthfeel is deliciously smoky with lots of malts ready and able to sweeten things up. A real treat that I'm glad was brewed again.
D: This bottle is a meal all by itself, thick and chewy with a fantastic smokiness. If you live within 2 hours of the brewery, you must make the trip.

first, i love scotch ales.
aroma is deliciously malty with a distinctive whiff of peat, caramel and some fruitiness. it pours a deep amber with a billowy tan head and very fine bubbles.
refreshingly light for its strength with beautiful rich malt chased by a smokey peat tang and offset by a judicious amount of hops. carbonation levels are spot-on.
lush midpalate packed with flavor and finishing beautifully with great balance and drinkablility. smoke character is persistent. stoudt's rocks!

750ml bottle obtained via trade with Px2GrafX. Thanks for the opportunity... Label notes a vintage date of 4/10/02 or so. Let's see what a year more in the cellar did for this one.
Poured into a heavy glass chalice, formed a 1/4" brown head over the barely translucent dark brown brew, with burgundy highlights. Head is quickly down to swirls, with more bubbles at the rim, and lacing is ample and lasting. Aroma is thick dark malt with alcohol easily apparent. Taste is the same dark malts, still with light peat smoke running through, and warming upon swallow. The alcohol is nowhere near as noticeable in the mouth as it was to the nose. Mouthfeel is oh-so smooth, and drinkability is superb. Kind of wish I had more of this in the stash, but beer was made for drinking...

Vintage 10/03 Pours a dark reddish brown, good amount of head that stays for about a minute. Very nice smell, sweet and strong of malty alchol goodness.
Taste gives a bit of cherries, malt, scotch, all of which are roasted? The taste was pleasent although not high on my drinkability scale. The alcohol didnt really bother me, it just wasn't as flavorful as I would have liked. As it warmed there was more sweetness which was a little turn off. This would be a good beer to pair with some appetizers though, maybe some strong cheeses and meats. Overall I wouldnt buy it again for myself, but maybe for a party.

Pours a dark brown with reddish, chestnut hues intermingled in the broth. Relatively thin tan head forms and settles down quickly.
Aroma of deep chocolate, roasted barley and earty, peaty tones. Somewhat surprisingly very aromatic after 4 years in the bottle.
Flavors of sweet chocolate and caramel with soem roasted malts subtly dancing in the background.
Mouthfeel is fairly thick and creamy and has maintained a nice even carbonation level after the aging. Full bodied with just a hint of sticky sweetness.
Drinkability was high, beer ws better by just a hair on the colder side as when it warmed to much the sweetness sort of overpowered some of the other falvor profiles.
Really enjoyable and true to style.
Thanks for the bottles Cory.

Bottle pour via the Flat Rock Saloon in Manyunk.
& smoked hickory essence. Charcoal smoky bit of Dr. Pepper.
First swigs: thick body. Smoked salmon hints. Stout suggestion of caramel and cocoa notes.
Feel is thick body. Endless foam. Great interpretation of the style.
Last swigs: Beer is good. Happy beering.

750ml. bottle, vintage 9/19/01
Pours out with a fast receding light brown head, settling out over very dark tawny brown liquid. Malty nose with hints of brown sugar. Roasty briefly smoky malt flavors with a chocolate hint, some light fleeting phenols with excellent full mouthfeel, very inviting. Not too much hop here, probably faded out over the years bit just enough to make it known. Finishes smooth, mellow, roasty/dry...still in great condition, aged to perfection!

765 mL. Vintage date 11/22/01.
Dark, with maybe a slight tinge of red, with a big thick brownish head. The smell is chocolate, with a little coffee, maybe a little smoke. Taste is really interesting... hard to put my finger on it, mostly malt with some bitter chocolate and a very little hops. The finish is dry, almost tannic, with a good mouthfeel - a solid malt presence, with enough dryness to keep you drinking. Decent carbonation level and light enough that I don't find this filling at all - contrary to some other reviewers, I love the drinkability - I could (and have been) drink this all night... and you don't noticed the 7% alcohol until after you've had a 765 mL to yourself on an empty stomach and are searching for the '%' key...
Not sure if I would call this a Scotch Style Ale - I expected it to have more carmel... I'd probably call this along the lines of a porter, but regardless, I'm going to have to track down more of these. Found this a few months ago on a shelf at a beer store in Binghampton, and it's stood up amazingly for 4 years. Great beer.

One of my last beautiful, beautiful big bottles left from a fest at the beginning of the year.... sigh....
Poured out such darkness that you can't see through it... yeasty chunks shooting around within... Tons of thick khaki head piled up and then finally reduced down to a little covering of thickness. Smells soooo nice, sasafrass and dark cherries, bit vineous. Maybe a bit of marachino cherry gong on. Very chewy, doughy, wonderful feeling. Tastes of scotch/whiskey, nice and warmly alcohol flavors.... dark fruits... darkened toast... cabernet..
This is just full of such good tastes. Another highly enjoyable offering from Stoudt's!
Man, will I hate to have to see them in anything but these big lovely bottles! Just so part of their experience!

Served in the 765 mL bottle into a goblet. The color is a very dark ruby red with a nice foamy layer of tan head. The smell is a very nice heavy sweet maltiness. The taste is very sweet, almost chocolate-like, without much alcohol in the way (just a nudge). Mouthfeel is very chewy. As for drinkability, this is a nice one to have a bit of, but doesn't seem really sustainable.
Goodbye to the Stoudt's 765s...we hardly knew ye. While I understand the reasons for getting rid of the bottles (7 dollars/case for the bottles themselves!!), I don't understand why they want to modify/get rid of such great beers, and I hope that they'll reconsider and bring this one (and others!) back as 12 oz. bottles.

I picked this up at Stoudt's in a 765 ml bottle.
It poured a nice strong purplish head that was real thick but didn't stick around for the finish. However, did lace nicely.
Had a deep purple color, if you didnt hole it up to the light you would think you had a porter or stout.
Not too much on the smell, a little fruity, a little malt.
The taste is where this brew comes through. Nice. Not too over powering. More then a hint of cherries, a bit of malt and a tang of alcohol going down. Pretty smooth for the ABV. A real good example for the style. In fact maybe a little more complex the most.
This is a lady's beer. You can drink a bit of these without getting full. (Driving after a few is a no no.)

The Stoudt's Scotch pours a dark reddish brown with a large kind of fizzy brown head that retains well. The final pour has a lot of floating yeasties.
Its aroma is chocolate and caramel malt with some fruit (date?) and liquor notes as well as a little smokiness.
The flavor is a lot of malt up front - some sweetness, caramel, chocolate, molasses and roasted malts. There's also a little fruitiness and smokiness. It has a crisp light bitter finish that balances it nicely. Some alcohol is noticeable. It is medium bodied and has a pretty creamy mouthfeel, a little strong on the carbonation though.
Overall, an excellent malty Scotch Ale.
