2006 bottle, next to a 2016 bottle.
Yeah, so somehow I had an '06 of this, and with the new batch out, I decided to share them side by side. Surprisingly the '06 held up very well, a tribute to Stoudt's good brewing consistency. Good appearance, like your typical stout: dark, black, sturdy tan head with good retention. The '06 had a slightly oxidized aroma, which was to be expected, underlying dark malt sweetness, very little barrel. The whiskey barrel was definitely more noticed in the '16, with a lot more dark malt roastiness coming out. Surprisingly smooth taste in the '06, whiskey was very subtle, dark malts and molasses. Following the nose, the '16 was definitely more roasty, hints of ash; the barrel wasn't too strong, but it was definitely present. Good mouthfeel in both, smooth, and slightly woody; medium body, could be better, but if you've had FD, you known what to expect. Overall a good experience.

On tap at brewery, also available in 750 mL bottles
$ 5.00/12 oz snifter ($ 0.417/oz)
Aroma – whiskey
Head – removed by bartender. What remained was light brown and creamy, diminishing to a three mm ring and thin partial layer
Lacing – none
Body dark brown/black, opaque
Flavor – watered down cheap whiskey, alcohol; no hops, no malt, no diacetyl
Palate – medium, almost creamy, lively almost fizzy carbonation
Needs more time in the barrel or perhaps a better grade of whiskey barrels.
Appearance 3.5, Aroma 3, Flavor 2.75, Palate 3, Overall 2.75
