This is a high gravity interpretation of the classic German style Black Lager. Generous amounts of dehusked German barley were used to give the beers its dark color without adding the roasted or burnt flavors that are typically associated with dark beers. This coupled with lower hopping rates lends to a smooth flavor with a medium body and mildly warming finish After primary fermentation and lagering, this beer spent 17 months in Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey barrels producing subtle oak, vanilla, and boozy flavors.

$ 18.02 (Including tax)/750mL bottle ($ 0.697/oz) at the brewery, Adamstown, PA.
Undated cork and cage bottle at 42 degrees. Opens with a muffled “pop” and does not foam out. Served at 45 – 54 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Aroma – Initial aroma very heavy chocolate and malt. Fades.
Head – large (Maximum 4.4 cm, aggressive pour), light brown, average density froth, average retention, diminishing to a three mm ring with some drag marks and a thin, nearly complete layer.
Lacing – fair. Partial rings of very tiny bubbles.
Body – black, opaque.
Flavor – malty, almost sweet. Some whiskey flavor and tannin come through at the end. Hops and alcohol are well-hidden. No diacetyl.
Palate – medium, almost creamy, soft carbonation.
Better than I was expecting. Stoudts’ whiskey barrel aged stuff is kind of all over the place in flavor but this one is pretty solid – the whiskey and the barrel both come through and enhance the base beer. Aging a lager for seventeen months is kind of suspicious in itself, but this one held up well and is better than the unaged version.
Appearance 3.75, Aroma 4, Flavor 4.25, Palate 4, Overall 4.
