L: Pours a lighter amber color with a tall and thick white head that settles fast to a slight film over the glass. It laces the glass a lot on the way down.
S: The smell is of sweet malt underneath a large amount of citrisy and piney hoppy aromas.
T: The taste follows the nose pretty well with a sweet malt base and alot of citrisy and piney hoppy bitterness to finish. Really nice taste.
M: Very crisp, refreshing, and a bit warming from the amount of alcohol.
D: Pretty drinkable for this big beer.

Had on tap at the Blind Tiger in NYC, pint glass

Appearance: mild haze to it, light amber color, great head poured

Smell: citrus, piney hop, sweetness from the malt

Taste & Mouthfeel: Brilliantly smooth within the medium body. Restrained hop bitterness, lots of hop flavour to go around though. Mildly piney with a solid citrus backing.

A superb IPA, hopping is not too out of control. Well balanced, nice to have one like this when people now are just looking for the hops in a DIPA, myself included. Even after finishing this the hops just stay on your tongue making you want another

Stopped in the other day for the first time to stoudt's brewery in adamstown, pa

Its a nice older steakhouse that the brewery was built on to.

Served in a 12oz. snifter. Golden amber in color. 2 finger head that goes away quickly. Not a lot of smell. Was surprised by this. Taste was great. Very sweet with lots of spicy hops at the end. Mouthfeel was creamy and stayed for a while on the palate. Drinkability, was great. Could have had a couple if I didn't have to drive home.

Very nice IPA.

765ml (1pt, 9.87oz) bottle from who knows where. 04 Vintage.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 2" beige head over the slightly cloudy reddish amber brew. Head grows before it falls, snow-coning above the rim, leaving sporadic chunks of lace in its wake. Aroma is sweet, but still predominantly fruity hops. Taste is intense, yet still balanced, with the sweetness and fruity hops working together to please the palate. Mouthfeel and drinkability are still superb. This one is like the Energizer Bunny of IPAs.

765ml (1pt, 9.87oz) bottle from Yankee Spirits, Sturbridge, MA.

Poured (carefully) into an imperial pint glass, formed a huge (~4") dense tan beige head, which took awhile to foam down so that I could get some more of the honey-amber hued brew into the glass. We're talking like five minutes! Not that I'm known for patience, but whoa, this head just won't go away. Nose is predominantly of biting hops, which is great. Taste is upfront with a heavy amount of malts (shockingly enough), which is balanced soon after by a big old shot of hops. Incredible. Mouthfeel and drinkability are stupendous. Highly recommended IPA, for sure.

I haven't seen this beer around for a while, so I decided to grab it. I was a bit hesitant at first, but the label said that it would mature nicely. Unfortunately the vintage date on the side was not exactly legible (the $6 dollar price tag didn't hurt either). Poured into a tulip glass a reddish pink color, with a big frothy white head. Smell had toasted grains, sweet honey and honeydew. Taste starts off very sweet, with the malt in the foreground, and the hops slightly hidden in the back. Honey and chocolate dominate this beer in the beginning, only to be replaced by a light kiss of hop flavor in the finish. Somewhat light on the palate as far as body, but the flavors are very pronounced. This is a very drinkable India Pale Ale. A few reviewers said that this was reminiscent of a scotch ale. I would have to agree. This is definitely one of the more interesting IPAs I have had in a while, although I am hardly surprised because Stoudts is a pretty great and innovative brewery.

750ml bottle from Newtonville Wine&Spirits, Newton, MA(great place). A - Poured a deep amber with a towering thick head with staying power. S - light on the aroma side, nothing pungent, slight hoppy smell, light mushrooms, a hint of sweetness. T - Wow, I'm not a real IPA fan, I lean towards Belgians myself, but this is an outstanding IPA. It carried numerous undertones without being heavy-tasting, and without any bitterness. Quite a feat. Hints of butterscotch, portobello, and a light nuttiness. M - Big carbonation coupled with its light body made for a better than average mouthfeel. D - Very drinkable. Didn't have time to finish, so put it back in the fridge and was still good the next day. Not that I'd recommend doing that. An IPA this good should be enjoyed in one sitting.

750ml bottle, capped, with a vintage date 4/25/02. I should've asked Ali at Boulevard carry out how the bottle had been stored recently. It pours deep, rich ruddy bronze color with golden overtones. The head extremely think, foamy, and stiff. I poured it with slight aggression, but the head immediately rose to take over the top half of my Arrogant Bastard pint glass. Great retention and copious thick, fluffy strands of lacing.

The smell is sweet and slighty spice hops, some pine, and light lemon. The flavor is differed from my expectations, and not in a negative way. Despite the typical IPA charateristics portended by the aroma, a creamy, butterscotchy, slightly chocolately, maltiness accompanied the hops.

The mouth is medium bodied and extremely complex with gread carbonation. The creaminess of the body, before the slightly bitter finish that features a sugary tang tempering the hops, sets it apart from many an IPA that just goes for a hop holocaust.

It very drinkable, as is well balanced and smooth. It almost seems like a Scothish ale mixed with an IPA. Some fans of IPA might dis it for not being robust enough, but I dig the mellow characteristics it brings to the table.

A: Pours a dark amber almost copperish murky color with an initial two finger cream colored foamy head. Lots of bubbles clinging to the sides of the glass. Looks carbonated.
S: Aromas of fruity and floral hops hit the nose first with a slight grassy smell also. Malts are noticeable also--they come in as the secondary smell and take over.
T & M: Very fruity and light taste up front with not much hops at all. Slight metallic taste also, which is unappealing. Earthy almost smokey malt notes leave a warm bitter feeeling on the tongue. Malts are the most dominant on this ipa with a fruity carbonated aftertaste, sort of like I just drank some seltzer. Very smooth and velvety on the palate. goes down very smooth. Refreshing even.
D: Drinkability is ok on this offering from stoudt's. I figured it would be more hoppy than it was, but no matter, still a good offering. Would have this again on tap to see if I missed anything or had a bad batch.

This was a brew dated 1/7/04 reviewed in April of 06. Usually I would not review an IPA aged like this, but it was a positive experience.

It had a nice dark copper color, and a smell of caramel and tropical fruits.

The taste included the same caramel malts, tropical fruit flavors, and subdued hops. Incredible malt profile, but still some fruity hop character to balance things out. The mouthfeel was silky smooth. Drinkability was excellent as well.

It wasn't my intention to cellar this one- I just got lucky. I must try it fresh now, but it's great with a couple of years under it's belt. A real surprise.

A bottled conditioned brew and it shows. Vintage dated 1.7.04, I guess the beer store was kind enough to age it for me, as I only bought it yesterday. This is actually one of the more intriguing IPA's I have had. I poured this beer about 40 minutes ago, and I still have the same ultra creamy 1/4 buttercream colored head I started with. Very cloudy copper, I did see some yeasties during pouring. Aromawise, I am picking up mostly piney notes, some alcohol. Also some bready yeastiness. Tastewise is where this one gets interesting. Some Maine type malts, over-all prevading yeasty quality makes me wonder if I am drinking a Belgian IPA. There's no real spice or anything going on, but the yeast is pronounced. The hops in the finish do taste like they have waited a good year and half in the bottle, the rough edges have been smoothed out and quite possible carmelised. The only roughness comes from the small carbonation as it hits your tongue. A nice change from IPAs that are all about the hops.

This is one of the best IPAs this beerdrinker has ever had the good fortune to try. The head is monstrous; in fact, it took so long to settle that it created a high anticipatory feeling - this is what great beer is supposed to be about. You know that it is something special. After a slow settle with little lacing, I detected a powerful floral aroma (almost sweetish); the color is a dark copper, the body and mouthfeel extraordinary - yet it is not overwhelmingly hoppy - a great blend, almost like a single malt in terms of complexity. Highly drinkable and highly recommended. Stoudt's is one of America's best microbrewers.

This is the way an IPA is supposed to be. Reminds me of the first IPA I ever tasted, really, my introduction into craft beer. Clean, crisp, fresh, delicious.

Pours brilliant hazy red/orange with a frost head and plenty of lacing all around the glass.

Taste is classic IPA. Awesome combination of fruits; banana, orange, grapefruit, a real citrus kick, followed by an incredible balanced hopppines, accompanied by equally balanced malts.

Judging as a category, this beer is tops in its class. It'll take a lot to persuade me to rate any other IPA higher. Well balanced a beer that I will defiantly revisit.

This came from the 750ml bottle a very dark ruby/garnet color with a thick tan head, and sheets of lace down the side of the glass. The aroma has some grass, pine and hop flowers with a bit of caramel malt and candy. The taste has some of the pine flavor with a hint of grapefruit and more malt sweetness than I expected. There is a pleasant bitterness towards the finish. The beer has a nice silky mouth feel, and is very drinkable.

This brew has a slightly hazy copper orange color with a thin 1/2" white head. Big bubbles in the head. Nice carbonation. Some lacing develops. The aroma was of malt and strong hops. The flavor was a nice balance of malt and serious bitterness, while some softer citrus tones floated in the background.

The mouthfeel was smooth at the start and had a light crisp and a very bitter finish. The bitterness lasted well into the aftertaste. A nicely drinkable IPA.

Served in the 765 mL bottle into a pint glass. The color is a dark copper, with a nice foamy head with great retention. The smell is a nice piney, slightly citrusy hoppiness. The taste certainly has a pineyish, slightly grapefruitish hop, but this beer is definitely as malty as an IPA comes, and the sweetness adds a nice element. Mouthfeel is average. As for drinkability, without hops to numb the mouth, this would be a very nice sessioner.

Sadly, this is one of the last remaining 765 mLs of this beer. The new Stoutdt's IPA will be another one of the super-duper-IPA variety, which I certainly enjoy, but there's a place for beers like this as well! So, here's at least one person hoping that the Stoudts will keep this recipe for new 12 oz. bottles. Quite good, and I really hope I'll have this one again.

Wow. The more I thought about it, the more I gravitated towards 4's for everything. A beautiful hazy orange with a nice head and some lacing. Nose is citrusy, with hints of pine, but the orange sweetness comes out more than anything else. Taste is a bit dry and slightly maltsweet and finishes with citrusy/lemon tartness (without lemon rind) and finishes with big sour bitter pinethat lingers and lingers. Carbonation and mouthfeel are pretty good. Carbonation adds to the hop bite slightly, but it feels smooth. Drinkability probably suffers from overt lingering bitterness, but when you're in the mood for an IPA, this is the stuff.

One of my biggies left from the early fest this year! yay!
Unfiltered cider color, dark and unclear, very cloudy and full of chunky sedement. Very thick looking during the pour, with tons of thick creamy khaki head that settled to a nice and full covering of thick tiny bubbles. Lightly scented of grapefruit rind. Thickish and creamy mouthfeel with a perfect amount of carbination, not too much and not too little. Perfect amount of bite, grapefruit and rind with abit of honey in the background. Slight sharp edgeyness in the aftertaste, makes me think of a nice aged sharp cheese, like a good asiago. This is such a nice IPA. Great freakin session beer. Excellent drinkability!

Sampled from a nicely trade 750ml bottle into a pair of pint glasses over a hard working brew day of making a Double IPA.

Notes as taken in the field:
Big hazy orange brew with a light beige head.

Aroma is all malt with a surprising lack of hops for an IPA. Its been a while since I've been on the east coast though. :) A brown sugar character of oxidation rounds the edges of the brew's aroma.

Flavor is malty at first blush, brown sugar and caramel toffees. Midpalate sees a strong citrus peel hop assert itself over the beer. Finally some hop to drive the beer home to a bitterish finish that cleans towards the next sip.

Not bad... Little old... little east coasty after all of these years exposed to the depravity of the west Coast.
