-Brewers reserve bottle bought from brewery.

(3.75) A: Flat black pour produces a wheaty-foam topping of medium beige coloring with a rigid structure and good retention rate. Skimpy covering is mostly lasting throughout the drink leaving a broken band lacing.

(3.75) S: Nose was fresh wet pine, soft citrus with hints of burnt chocolate with a good level of awareness.

(3.85) T: Flavor was chocolate citrus, pine with a solid level of hoppiness. Fresh, wet and sticky piney hop resins, are balanced with a earthy, bitterness of soil and hops. Dark, sweet, juicy fruit with a finish of pine hops.

(3.85) M: Medium body average carbonation, bitttering sticky mouthful.

(3.85) O: Overall as a black ipa was fresh and wet pine hopping with an earthy bittering balance. Chocolate roast pine, smooth flavor, strong drinkability factor makes this a definite try for the black ipa fan. very good.

Another bottle from Deuane's basement.

A - Pours dark brown with a one finger tall off-white head leaving spotty lacing down the glass.

S - Smells of dulled citric hops, burnt caramel malt, molasses, dry oak, and some dulled fruit. This one is a bit past its prime.

T - Starts off with a big dose of slightly charred caramel malt slowly giving way to a mix of dulled citric hops, molasses, and some light fruit. The finish is a mix of charred caramel sweetness and some light hop bitterness.

M - Medium body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Sweet, slightly bitter, feel with plenty of it lingering through the finish.

O - Not bad but nothing I would be seeking out at this point.

Had this from a 750ml bottle on 2009-12-06

There was too much carbonation in the bottle of this barrel-aged brew. When I popped the cork a gusher of beer erupted. I probably lost close to half the bottle.

It poured with a ridiculous 6" tan head that left a tremendous amount of lacing as it settled. The liquid is a caramel color.

The smell and taste were of molasses, licorice and citrus with mild-medium bitterness. It was very well-balanced although I'm not a big fan of licorice.

The mouthfeel is thick and chewy.

I'm glad I had the opportunity to try this well-made pale ale.

Appears a dark, orange toned brown with a huge, clumpy light tan head that slowly fades into a thick, soapy cap. Scattered nits of lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of and citrusy, grapefruit, & gummy bears.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with some doughy, rummy flavors
Mouthfeel is bitter, caramel sweetness in the background, with some grainy astringency found in the swallow.

On Tap @ the Blind Tiger 10-29-08

A: Deep dark ruby color, small head that fades quickly, and leaves behind scattered lacing

S: The aroma is floral some caramel, not real strong

T: Begins with Burnt caramel malty flavor, sweet in the middle and finishes with a citrus hop that lingers long after

M: pretty good hop flavor for a pale ale and a little on the sweet side

D: fairly easy drinking pale ale, may be a little to heavy for some people used to lighter pale ales, really enjoyed this one. I just noticed that this was listed as an IPA..even though its called black eye PALE ALE...a little confused

On-tap at the Spinnerstown Hotel, served in a tulip. Appears brown with a short off-white head, so it's not exactly black.

I can't say I even really taste the dark malts here, but the feel is a bit similar to other dark IPAs for the smooth, mellow malty undertone. The hops provide a big punch of flavor with sharp citrus and a bit of pine. The harsh hops stand as a nice balance to the malts and make this a drinkable beer still worthy of the IPA name.

A casked IPA aged on bourbon soaked oak chips?!? Hell yeah!

a: This was a mostly clear, dark coppery amber color. It pours with a thin, light tan, soapy head.

s: Noticeable woody oak and some bourbon. Fresh juicy hops that smell of lemon, and grapefruit with just a hint of pine. Overall, this is a fantastic smelling beer, I couldn't keep my nose out of it.

t: Falls short of the smell, unfortunately. The naked wood flavor is a bit too strong. The bourbon and the hops clash a bit at the finish. The hops are very lemony with a bit of pine. Plenty of caramel malts helped keep things in balance.

m: Spot-on cask texture, very nicely done by Stoudt's. The lingering bitter wood flavor was a potent, however.

d: Very nice to see my favorite local brewery trying new and exciting things. This one needs tweaked a bit though.

A hand-pulled pint served at the General Sutter in Litiz, PA.

A: The ale is lighter than I expected, a ruddy caramel colored ale with a thick dense white head that nicely layers around the glass.

S: The aroma is floral, fragrant hops with a sweet caramel syrup undertone. The hops are mouthwatering, citrusy with a nice bite.

T: The ale has a strong caramel malt flavor that comes across as cloying at times. I hope that that is a result of the cask, as it can be a bit much. The hop presense is herbal and citrusy, biting with a great sweetness that has touches of tangerine and apricot. The interplay of the big hops and caramel malts is quite pleasing, if not a little too heavy on the malts. The hop bitterness lingers long after the sip is gone.

M: The mouthfeel oftens teeters too far into the sweet caramel syrup. The hop profile is pleasingly strong.

D: I am looking forward to trying this one on draught. I think that that will settle the caramel malts down a tad. This is also another offering in the black IPA trend, keep 'em coming people!
