Had on-tap at Capone's in Norristown, PA. I had been feeling like a rauchbier for awhile, so I had to grab this one while I could. Poured a clear orange-yellow color with pretty much no head to speak of. No lacing. Had an aroma of smoke and sweet malts. Very underwhelming nose. Tasted of caramel and sweet malts with smoke throughout. Not very complex and actually just generally weirdly balanced. It was almost like the rauchbier characteristics were an afterthought and this one was really intended to be a pale ale.
Light-bodied with good carbonation. This one was a miss for me...a good attempt but not well executed.

First had: on tap at Capone's, Norristown, PA
Another so-so offering from Stoudt's. This one poured a clear honey color with a few patches of tiny bubbles on the surface in lieu of a head. Mellow aroma, sweet malts, caramel, a touch of smoke. I like a good rauchbier, when it's pronounced and full of flavor. This beer was not that, but still good in it's own way. Very light and mild to start, smooth caramel and sweet malts, with a light smokiness coming in upon swallowing the first sip. Finished dry with hints of gentle hoppage. On the medium end of light-bodied, not particularly impressive overall, but still good, and drinkable in it's own right. Definitely worth a try.

Appearance was pale yellow with a finger of head that dissipated quickly and left some lacing on the glass. The smoke is definitely present in both the nose and the taste, but little else interesting accompanies it. The dry finish was nice, but overall this beer needed to be heartier to hold up the smoke flavor

Served on-tap at Paradise into a 12 ounce snifter. Apparently this is a Brewer's Reserve but from what I could find, it doesn't list it as such.
A: Golden honey colored beer, crystal clear with absolutely no head whatsoever. No lace or retention, naturally. It's not necessarily bad looking but the lack of head could have been a bad pour or the way it was brewed, who knows.
S: Pale smoked malts, sweet floral notes, light grains and a touch of honey. In comparison to other Rauchbiers I've had, this is definitely on the more reserved side. The aroma isn't over the top smoky but there's just enough to let you know what you're drinking.
T: No hops up-front but there is some sweeter pale malts that come through. There isn't an aggressive malt character like I thought there would be. It's again toned down, but some biscuity smoked flavors come through towards the end of the palate. Finishes a touch on the drier side, but extremely crisp.
M: Fairly carbonated, to my surprise on the lower end of a medium body than I expected. It's not overly bubbly, but again does finish crisp and clean. Really nice.
This was a pretty good attempt by Stoudt's; there isn't anything offensive about this beer, but it's certainly not something that's memorable. The smokiness is restrained as to not be too much but I don't think it would have hurt to have a bit more of that flavor in the beer.
