This Dortmunder style beer was the 2003 Great American Beer Festival Bronze Winner, European-Style Pilsner Category, originally brewed in the area around the city of Dortmund in western Germay. It is a full bodied pale lager that falls beteen the dryness of a German Pilsner and the sweet maltiness of Munich Helles. Brewed with imported German Pilsner malt, Northern Brewer and Hallertau hops. Finished with a late kettle addition of Spalter Select.

Half pint glass at the brewery on 6-6-05. The beer menu lists this as 6.5% abv, and 26.5 IBUs. The Wort Hog has a clear, goldenrod body with a one finger white head. Good head retention with lots of patchy, island chain lace on the glass. Aroma is subdued, with floral and grassy notes atop a bready malt backbone. Mouthfeel is light medium bodied with low medium carbonation. Smooth, yet crisp, on the palate. Taste has some spicy hops bitterness up front, and a solid toasted grain malt backbone. Hops have an earthy and grassy character in the middle and end, for a mildly bitter finish. Nice complexity for a lager style, with enough going on to warrant having another.

On Tap poured into a nonick pint glass. It pours a light amber color with two fingers of head. There is some lacing left on the glass. The smell is of slight grassy and hop aromas. It's not a very strong smell though, and it doesn't become more present as it warms. The taste is great though. It starts with some sweet caramel malt, a hint of nutty and grassy flavors. The finish is crisp and full of hops. Very well balanced. The mouthfeel is fair, and for 5.8% the drinkability is great. A nice summer beer on this 90 degree day!
