I had this on tap at the brewpub on Shelbyville Road in Louisville. Brewed to commemorate March Madness. Served in a pils glass chilled.
A - A deep amber/caramel brown w/ golden highlights and a paper thin head of white. The ale has a steady stream of bubbles rising up to the wispy head.
S - The smell is distinctly Belgian w/ a nice crisp yet slightly spiced and biscuity malt aroma. There are pleasant yeast esters w/ tinges of sweet malt/sugar as it is swirled.
M- Sweet w/ crisp and fruity notes and tinges of tart apples w/ a spiced ginger like subtle medicinal feel. The texture is grainy w/ a good amount of booze on the palate and in the swallow. There is plenty of malt here w/ moderate carbonation adding balance.
T - Delightful crisp pale malt w/ a candi sugar sweetness and light banana flavor w/ subtle spice and a great deal of Belgian yeast w/ a round bready note and subtle yet appropriate spicing. A fine flavor of biscuity toasted malt w/ a sweet nutty accent and very ripe banana w/ a boozy warmth as it finishes.
D - A pretty decent American Dubbel - it hit the spot and added a nice contrast to the brick oven spinach and artichoke chicken pizza w/ the carbonation cutting through the oily aspect of the 5 cheese base. I enjoyed this even though the ester of fruity yeast was a very prominent flavor/aroma. It is a fairly good representation of the style, I would definitely not hesitate to give this a try.
