This Porter pours very dark, velvety brown. Looking at it through a Pretentions Beer Glass Company dimpled mug, it is black. A four inch, foamy chestnut head gradually morphs to rockiness before eventually beginning to settle, then dissipating to a pillow, leaving thick patchy lace.
Initially, the rich chocolate aroma is highlighted by very light bourbon. Unfortunately, a sweet, soapy aroma follows.
The flavor has some chocolate and lots of dark, though indistuingishable, fruit. It is quite sweet with only a touch of bourbon and a mild, lingering finish.
The body is light to medium with a watery texture. Alcohol is significantly below expectation and the carbonation is light and fizzy. There is a touch of bitter astringency.
This is not what one might be expecting. If one likes sweet beer and can get past the soap, then it is a decent brew. I enjoyed it during the Equinox, not that that matters, but I wanted to say, "Equinox".
