cool of these guys to get together and kick it all off with a nice pale ale like this, given the mikkeller takeover of the old alesmith space. its a good beer, but a little bland and underwhelming given the brewers involved here. nothing at all wrong with it, a classic west coast pale, even flirting with the ipa line a little bit, fresh and well hoppy, but i just doesnt stand out as different or better than anything else to me. a little haze but a mostly clear honey colored brew. it has a mostly pine hop complexion under its white head, at least in the nose, where that fresh spruce sort of hop aromatic leaps right out of the glass. a little sweet on the first sip, and that never really subsides, but it doesnt bother me, this is oily and texturally big for an american pale, so a little sugar doesnt weight it down any more than it already is. solid bitterness comes on late, well after the swallow. i would like this to be a little more drinkable, it feels too hefty on the grain, and i would like it to have better carbonation, its not flat but it doesnt sing either. overall though tasty beer, but i bet others they collaborate on in the future will be a lot more exciting...
