Robust flavors, very dark/black color, somewhat bitter. Nice Diving Dog, March 2017.

On tap at Alesmith Brewing Company in San Diego, CA.
This one pours a very dark black, with a small tight white head, and lots of lacing.
Smells like smoky and deep bitter gourmet chocolate, with piney and leafy hops, heavy duty charred malt, and dark roast coffee.
This is a really cool collaboration, as you can see the hand of both breweries. The classic bitter and burnt flavor from Mikkeller is on display, with a dry smokiness and heavy roast. The full flavor and body of Alesmith is here, too. There's a nice hop presence- sort of an East India Porter with heavy leafy hoppiness that reminds me of tea and burnt pine.
This has a nicely creamy mouthfeel, and it's pretty full bodied for a Porter.
This is a really nice example of a hoppy and dry Porter- great job by both breweries.

Sampled at CBC 2016 - second day. Dark pour with a nice beige head. Notes of roasted malts, chocolate and cocoa.

this is that exact honey hole between traditional porter and black ipa that i love so much, just amplified on the depth and abv, pretty impressive brew and a whole league better than the pale ale these guys collaborated on as part of the same project. its coal black in the glass, stark contrasting almost pure white head, an aroma of unlit cigar, spicy cascade hops (or something similar), an ashy charred low end, espresso and black tea, tons going on here. thats true with the flavor too, it all starts with the dark roast of the barley. i dont think there are any additives in this, but it really does have a smokey flavor, a black licorice component, and that insanely bitter pure dark cacao. tobacco again makes sort of the segue between dark grains and hops, which start sort of fresh and leafy vegetal, but move quickly into an intensely bitter finish, exacerbated by the bitterness in the dark barley. still fresh though, there is a spicy northwestern element to them that really works here, comes through all the black to bring some life. flush medium body on it, a long residual on the tongue after the swallow, but none of it is sweetness, and just enough carbonation for the style. this is a robustly flavored beer, heavy on the dark grain, but its also easy drinking for what it is, an impressive beverage all up. awesome take on the style.
