taster flight at brewery. Muddy brown pour, small bublby beige head. Sweet, roasty aroma, chocolate. Taste is over sweet, roasty, sugary. bad finsh to a mediocre flight.

a really different take on this style, a beer i could really pick out from a crowd of big stouts, and i like that, but its also a little less than perfectly refined, but i can forgive its amateur edges for its uniqueness in an increasingly samey style. this is a little flat from the tap without much head on it, a deep chocolate brown, quite viscous and leggy in the glass, with a cool aroma of baking cocoa, figs and raisins, and good espresso, but is also lacks that deep roasted bitter barley element that the style is generally built around, so it almost smells like a big brown ale or something, a little sweet molasses and brown sugar here, and a trace of its alcohol strength as well. its sweet to drink on, full of chocolate richness and the raisin thing, i get a little rum and cola from it too which is neat in a stout, as well as a good espresso crema character, but without the usual roasted bitter aspect i have come to expect in the style, its lighter there, but still heavy beer, if that makes sense. on one hand i like it being lighter, i taste more and different things than are common in these, but i also miss the bitterness for balance on the other hand, and found this quite sweet and even syrupy overall. i like this because its distinct and the malt flavors are complex and well layered, but i couldnt drink more than one of these. more carbonation would help, but so would it being drier on the whole. neat recipe, they have a good thing going in here!

Appearance is dark brown with a moderate tan head that recedes fairly quickly to a stable ring leaving minimal lacing. Aroma has a lot of dark fruit notes, prunes, dried cherries, & figs. Taste is similar, slightly sweet and dominated by the fruit flavors. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy.
