A big, bold Russian Imperial Stout aged in a JJ's Knob Creek Single Barrel bourbon barrel. Rich and expressive with chocolate notes and some stone fruit character.

Fernson JJ's Knob Creek Single Barrel Aged Russian Imperial Stout, 9.5% ABV 40 IBU. Pours medium viscosity and black with no head. Wonderful nose is sweet bourbon with a hint of chocolate. Taste is extremely strong bourbon with a bit of a burn, and a slight bitter close. Mouthfeel is OK, overall OK. Could be outstanding with a bit more complexity, but as it is this is a huge bourbon bomb. Bourbon barrel beers are my favorite, and they often improve with warming. When this warmed, it was more like beer barrel bourbon. Any beer flavor the base beer had was obliterated by the bourbon.

Thick black with a light brown peeking through at the bottom of the snifter. The head is thin but stable, 1/4 finger.

I get deep aromas of dark chocolate, molasses, cherry tobacco, and coconut milk.

The flavor starts off with waves of both cherry creme (like one of those chocolates with the white goo and cherry with coconut on top) and anise, finishing off with, yeah...that's knob creek alright (not my favorite whiskey) and tobacco notes. Slight ash and more chocolate-tobacco (like a chocolate swisher sweets) remains on the palate.

Feel is a tad more carbonated than I'd like for a Russian Imperial Stout, I think they should have made it thicker, more syrupy, but instead I get a thinned out Russian Imperial Stout. Still within spec, but barely.

Overall, it's a nice effort, I can't knock them too hard. It's decent, just not one of my favorites. Give it a try if you get a chance.
