Crooked Can Brewing Co. "Black Frost"
12 fl. oz. can; freshness dating is present but illegible
Notes via stream of consciousness: The body is a very dark brown that appears almost black in the full glass. The head is a thin cap of khaki colored foam that drops readily. In the nose it's fruity with some mild dark maltiness. The taste follows and the fruitiness is like apple, red grape, and black raisin. The maltiness suggests dark chocolate and roastiness but never really comes to fruition. In terms of being a schwarzbier the maltiness is good but the fruitiness is too much. A moderate to median bitterness balances it and it finishes dry with some fruitiness and distant roastiness and dark chocolate lingering. In the mouth it's medium bodied and smooth with a moderate, fine-bubbled carbonation that at least partially explains why the head drops so quickly. Unfortunately that means that there's next to no lacing left behind. All in all it's a decent beer but not the greatest example of a well made German-style schwarzbier.

12 oz. can
5.0% ABV
Canned on: 10/22/24
$13.49 6-pk @ Publix
AROMA: Slightly sweet with mild scents of brown sugar and malt. As the beer warms I start to get moderate scents of coffee and dark chocolate.
APPEARANCE: Pours an opaque black with a 2-finger, dark tan head that dissipates at a moderate pace, with moderate lacing.
TASTE: Slightly bitter with strong flavors of unsweetened dark chocolate and bold espresso. From the aroma, I was expecting something a little sweet, but the flavor is mostly a mild bitterness. The finish is slightly dry with a hint of milk flavor.
MOUTHFEEL: Medium-bodied but leaning towards full-bodied. Smooth and slightly creamy with above-average carbonation.
OVERALL: Honestly, this beer reminds me of a Guinness with the only differences being that the Guinness has a slightly smoother texture and has a touch of sweetness. Which is probably why I find myself really liking this beer.

The pour is umber brown with a fair amount of carbonation. The taste is rich roasted malt followed by roasted coffee beans. Cheers! B
