Howler poured on 2/15/2018. No way was I going to age this, so brought home and poured into a becher pint glass.
The appearance was a mostly bright yellow to tickled copper color. A nice sturdy looking finger and a half's worth of white foamy head sat atop and seemed to concave inward gently. Lace wound fairly nice around the glass, somewhat messy, but mostly nice.
The aroma seemed to blend the citra hops nicely with the rye floral sweetness. Some light spicy rye-ness did come out as it warmed. Touch of sweet grassiness even slighter on the back end.
The flavor wanted to lean towards the bittersweet blend of the rye and citrus. However, a part of me seemed to want to say - it seemed a bit more citrusy sweet. I didn't mind for me. Mild aftertaste of the citrus.
The mouthfeel was almost medium bodied, perhaps a touch under with a nice sessionability about it. Nothing is distracting - no rye spicy harshness and no citrusy peel-like harshness, and to me that's what made this beer really nice in the feel. Mild carbonation and a nice ABV penetrating the finish in a nice fashionable sort of way.
Overall, might not be something I'd reach for a lot of this time of year, but am really hoping 1st Republic brings this one back this Summer. That's when I believe most people are going to want this one.
