Pours a murky golden color. It's not 100% turbid, but it definitely fits the mold of a hazy IPA. The head is a finger high and white in shade. It has the soft, frothy texture endemic of a wheat beer, and fails to leave behind much lacing (also like a wheat beer). It's not often I get to say this, but the look is really hinting to the nature of this beer!
While it isn't strong, the level of aromatic hops satisfy. Notes of tangerine, orange, grapefruit, and mango show up. Maybe a touch of coriander and other spice. Speaking of coriander, it hits me: the malt backbone is incredibly wheaty - the whole thing comes across like a wheat beer that's hoppier than normal. Still, this is by no means a toothless malt-bomb of an IPA, it just isn't as fragrant or explosive as a top-tier New England IPA.
It opens up with light hop notes. Orange is dominant, with subtle backing of mango, grapefruit, and tangerine. The back end features assertive flavors of orange peel, vanilla, and toasted wheat bread. This definitely comes off like a hoppy wheat instead of an IPA to me. It gets a middling score because of that (and the fact it's fairly simplistic), but I kind of like it at the end of the day. Maybe it's because this is the first recipe from my friend after he became head brewer at Scorpion, I dunno. Nah, it's still a decent beer, if not a great IPA.
This is incredibly light, crisp, and refreshing, with a fairly soft texture. It's a little sweet, but also has an off-dry finish typical of a good wheat beer. Carbonation isn't overbearing like some wheat beers or IPAs.
Bear in mind that it seems like this was brewed to a price point - it only cost me $9/6 pack, after all. And because of that, it can't hold a candle to the big dogs in terms of hop boldness or that "juice bomb" quality. If this was at the stereotypical $16/4 pack range most NEIPAs retail for, I'd definitely lambast this much harder. Still, I could totally see someone who doesn't like IPAs enjoying this. Temper those expectations. This is a crowd pleaser that can fill that hop craving in a pinch, not a balls-to-the-wall hazy juice bomb.
3.33/5: A damn fine IPA for beginners
