On tap at Taft's Ale House, arrived in a nonic pint.
Appearance: Arrived as an impenetrably dark deep, rich brown, only discernible as brown due to some vague hints of potential highlights around the edges. No head, no cap, no ring, no lacing - much like a well of ink.
Smell: Despite the presence of an active kitchen, I was able to perceive banana, clove, and wheat billowing out of the glass.
Taste: Mushy bruised-black banana floods the mouth from the first sip, wreathed through with a fair dose of a cherry flavor that borders on medicinal syrup. A whisper of coriander citrus manifests as the beer moves along, beneath a rush of ABV heat. Somewhere beneath the banana, a current of faintly, vaguely musty wheat ghosts by, accompanied by a touch of toffee that seems to bite at the tongue.
Mouthfeel: Smooth and silky, this is medium in body and mild of carbonation. The ABV makes its hot presence felt.
Overall: As per usual for me reviewing a weizenbock, I should disclose that I am as spoiled in this arena as one can be, as I can find relatively fresh Aventinus and Vitus on tap on a regular basis. I've given plenty of non-German breweries many a chance to even come within the ballpark of some of the other German weizenbocks. This is yet another failure to do so. Weizenbocks remain firmly a German-only endeavor to me until someone can step up and prove otherwise.
