Imperial espresso stout aged in Bourbon barrels. Bottle 15 of 150. Poured into a Taft's Brewery tulip. The pour is very dark mahogany (nearly black) and, even though the carbonation is low, it still produces a finger of dark tan head with good retention. On the nose I get roasted malt, burnt sugar, unsweetened cocoa, toasted oak, fudge, and vanilla.
Full body with a creamy feel and a boozy, fudgy flavor. I had a beer called ``Big Silky'' at the brewpub, but it was just a big coffee stout (excellent by the way) and it wasn't barrel-aged like this. Molasses and milk chocolate up front give way to coffee and vanilla at mid-palate. A nice booziness comes in and adds warmth and richness, but doesn't make the beer too sharp. Finishes with bourbon and fudge. A little age may do this beer some good.
This was a special release by Taft. Given the low bottle count, I was delighted to be able to score some of it. Perhaps a lot of beer fans are concerned because barrel-aging is new for Tafts My impressions are that this is a first-rate barrel-aged beer. You have a big, roasty, chocolatey stout with nice barrel-notes, but it doesn't taste too boozy or oxidized. I know of several brewers who barrel age a lot of beers and don't do it this well. I look forward to trying some other offerings from Taft like this.
