Imperial espresso stout aged in Bourbon barrels with cocoa nibs, cinnamon, and chile peppers added. Bottle 5 of 30. Poured into a small snifter. The pour is very dark mahogany (nearly black) with low carbonation and a finger of dark tan head with good retention. On the nose I get roasted malt, cinnamon, espresso, cocoa, toasted oak, and vanilla.
Full body with a creamy feel and a complex flavor. Up front I get the same molasses and milk chocolate as with the regular Big Silky, then the cinnamon creeps in and adds complexity. On the finish there is that same nice booziness which provides warmth and richness, and then just a whiff of chili pepper.
This was a special release by Taft. Given the low bottle count, I was delighted to be able to score some of it. I liked it, but not quite as much as the regular barrel-aged Big Silky. This one had some added complexity, but lacked that fudgy character that the other beer has. Nothing at all wrong with it. I thought this beer was extremely well-crafted. It's just my personal preference.
