16 fl oz pull-tab can courtesy of Katelynn and Vince - thanks!

Served cold into a Boston Beer Co. perfect pint glass.

APPEARANCE: Deep amber body. Off-white head...~6 minute retention.

Looks as a rauchbier ought to. Very no-nonsense, with obvious filtration and good carbonation.

AROMA: Smoked malt...probably beechwood given its relative neutrality. Caramelized sugar, deep amber malt/Vienna malt, baked bread.

There's no smoke harshness, ashtray bacon, or other aggressive smokey notes that bother those who aren't diehard rauchbier fans (though I love them).

To style, there're no overt hop aromatics.

Suggests a lovely well-balanced straightforward rauchbier. As a huge fan of the style, I hope it delivers - but it does seem to just be an "American brewers who imported Weyermann malts" sort of rauchbier instead of a "craft brewers smoked their own malts with interesting woods and fully committed" sort of rauchbier.

TASTE: Delivers on the promises of the aroma, which is to say it's an even-keeled rauchbier with a subtle smoked malt presence (all neutral beechwood - more than likely imported Weyermann) amidst an amber malt backbone. Maybe Vienna Malt? It has that baked bread flavour...

To style, there's no overt hop flavour.

Simplistic, sure, but it's very well balanced and the smokiness isn't harsh or overaggressive. Well built and true to style, ticking all the boxes it needs to to scratch a diehard rauchbier fan's itch.

Toasty and bready without being too filling or overbearing.

TEXTURE: Aptly subtly coarse on the palate. Smooth, light to medium-bodied, refreshing, near perfectly carbonated.

Not oily, gushed, harsh, hot, boozy, astringent, rough, or scratchy.

OVERALL: This is kind of all I want in a mainstream American brewed rauchbier...why can't more breweries do this? If I could find this at ~$10 a sixer, I'd buy it regularly. Worthwhile fare from Mikerphone, even if it's a bit simplistic in comparison to a top-tier effort like Schlenkerla.

High B- (3.50) / WORTHY
