902 Brewing Co. "Single Hop Series: Simcoe"
16 fl. oz. can without production codes or freshness dating
"Brewed by KUKA Beer Blauvelt, NY for 902 Brewing Co Hudson County, NJ"
$3.49 @ Roger Wilco, Pennsauken, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: There were several different varieties of these single hop beers available but I didn't want to take a chance on them seeing as how there's no freshness dating. That seems a little backwards to me considering it's a single hop beer, you want to ensure it's fresh, but whatever, I just hope this one isn't old. It's opened with a gentle crack and poured a cloudy golden amber body beneath a short head of white foam. The head retention doesn't seem to be that great, it's already dropped quite a bit, but there is some nice lacing left behind. The aroma is hoppy, and I guess I'd say fairly distinctly Simcoe. It's fruity, really more tropical than anything else, and somewhat piney and softly herbal. If I have to pick some fruits to describe it I'd go with guava and passion fruit backed by grapefruit. Some malt comes through as well with a bready and biscuity character to it. On to the flavor... there's much more malt to it, and less hop flavor. There's even a very light bit of caramel to the malt. A very firm bitterness balances it and it's clearly an IPA. It finishes mostly dry with the malt fading steadily and the hops lingering, changing from fruitiness to pine and resin and earth. I've poured the last quarter of the can now and the head has done the same thing as when I first poured it but the lacing remains pretty good. I'm not sure this beer needs to be so cloudy though, it's almost murky, and I can see particulate in suspension. I wonder what it would taste like if it was filtered, or at least allowed to drop clearer, but I digress, although part of the cloudiness may have to do with its mouthfeel, which is soft and smooth with a medium body and moderate, fine-bubbled carbonation. I don't know, it's pretty decent but it doesn't stand out from the crowd to me. I like the straightforward Simcoe hops, they're not brash, and nicely balanced, but I think there's a little too much going on in the grain bill and it's overall a bit dull. If you don't know what Simcoe hops taste like I'd recommend this as it's one of the better examples I've come across, but otherwise it's just not anything special.
