Allagash had the honor of hosting De Struise Brouwers Brewmaster Urbain Coutteau and his co-workers Carlo Grootaert, Phil Driessens and Peter Bruin; along with the "Homebrew Chef" Sean Paxton of homebrewchef.com on August 29. Our Brewers collaborated on a Belgium Blonde called Fedeltá which means Fidelity in Italian. De Struise had previously brewed a version of this beer at their farm brewery in Belgium. After collaborating strategically over e-mail, phone and in person on brew day, the five brewers were able to put all their hard work into a great brew.

Fedeltá, 8.2% Blonde was brewed using a selection of imported Pilsner Malt, Domestic Pale Malt as well as 15% Wheat Malt. American Cascade and Amarillo Hops were also selected resulting in 35 IBU. Also added in the boil was Cane Sugar and Honey. Fedeltá was fermented with our house Belgian-style strain, producing a subtle ester profile. The result is a smooth beer with subtle flavors of spice, honey, and vanilla as well as citrus hop flower notes. Fedeltá was available in limited markets.

On tap at Capone's. Pours a cloudy gold with a small white head. Aroma of wheat, some clove and spices. Flavor is very wheaty with tons of spices and yeast. Definitely more of a witbier (similar to Fluxus too I think). Pretty chill and easy to drink.

On-Tap

Fedelta has a bright golden color with some tangerine thrown in. A loose but fairly stable white head stayed for a bit leaving little lace, barely none. Smell is of belgian yeast, banana some slight citrus qualities and malt sweetness. Some hay as well. Taste takes a nosedive as it's just not hitting me. I think im just not fond of this particular yeast strain. Taste is some rotting banana with not so pleasant yeast with some floral and citrus in the finish. Feel is below medium with low carb which aint all that bad. I drank this quick to be done with it.

A Belgian Pale ale by definition. A clean, clear crisp pour, little froth floating on top of brew. A floral hop nose..smells of summer. This is an ok BPA, light and hoppy...I couldn't enjoy very much of this beer, there's nothing noticeable that would set this brew apart from other Pale Ales...just an average Pale Ale. I would expect more from Allagash.

Finally got a chance to try it, I seem to have always missed my chance when it was at the GLB and Novare. As luck would have it, the Lion's Pride had it on their opening tap list.

Pours a hazy golden yellow color, large amount of head with a good deal of patchy lacing along the glass.

Smell is rather odd, a mix of banana and clove along with an assertive hop presence and a citrus wheat aroma as well.

Taste is unsure what it wants to be with the flavors all colliding, on one end is the Belgian presence with banana and clove, on the other a hopped up Blonde ale, neither really win in the end so I have to call it a "disappointing" draw.

Glad I finally had this Allagash offering, but it's certainly not one of their better beers, good beer, just not up to my standards from them.

On tap at Barleys last night, I was thrilled to see this handle on the wall. I had wanted to try this and thought I had missed my chance. Served in a pint glass, this one was consumed on 06/11/2009.

The nice hazy golden yellow pour was about what I would have expected. Rich white head reaches up to a about an inch before it barely settles down. Nice full look to it. Really nice aroma here. Lots of grain up front then a shot of cloves, light peaches and pears and a quick hit of citrus. Totally unexpected and really very, very well done. Rich notes of grain and almost a chewy, earthy quality to the taste. Very bright here with lemon zest and orange peel highlights to it. Very nicely carbonated as well now as it was a smooth, easy sipping belgian pale that hid its alcohol very, very well.

Overall not what I expected, but very well done and something I would be thrilled to try again. Glad this one crossed my path.

(From notes)

A - Light orange/yellow gold. Poured with a thinner white head that held pretty well.

S - Citruisy, spicey, get some cloves and malt sweetness

T - Spices show up first, but fairly light; lemon sherbet; and pretty sweet

M - Lighter, slightly sticky, and spritzy carbonation

D - Nicely drinkable, and pleasant. Alcohol warmth provides a soothing character to the brew

Overall, pretty aligned with what I would expect for the style, and a nicely done brew. Definitely recommended.

Pours a slightly fogged amber gold with a white head. Flavor is smooth. Mild Belgian yeast strain bite with minor spices and an overall earthiness. Interesting mature fruit tones. Carbonation has a bit of a bite. Liquid is sticky thick. Nice to drink.

On tap at Capone's...
Appears a semi transparent hazy light gold with a small white cap that fades into a mild collar. Tons of scattered lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of honey, woody flavors, earty, grass notes.
Taste is of the aromas with more yeast, and bitter wood notes coming through.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, spicy, floral, herbal, with a semi dry finish.

Served in a goblet, the beer was a hazy golden color with a thick white head that rretained pretty well and left some decent lacing. It had a spicy citrus aroma, maybe a little floral. Lemon/orange flavor, cloves, and a bit of pine. This was a crisp, tangy beer. Very easy to drink.

Appearance: clear yellowish orange in color with a one finger head that lasts a while. Nice lacing paints the glass.

Smell: yeast, grass, and some milder citrus tones are easy to detect.

Taste: nice malt base with big spicy yeast flavors, pepper, green grapes, citrus, and a mild bitterness. Alcohol is somewhat noticeable.

Mouthfeel: medium-heavy in body. Crisp from start to finish, and the finish is also a bit drying. Aftertaste is long as the yeast and spices linger on the tongue.

Drinkability: great flavored beer that is a slow sipping ale. Worth seeking this one out.

Served on-tap at Max's during 72 Hours of Belgium.

A: The ale is a hazy golden color, dulled by the sediment but still rather brilliant.

S: The nose is spicy and peppery. Clove and wheat tartness are tempered by a very dry yeast strain.

T: The ale has a firm malt base, bready with a punch of wheat tartness. Pepper, orange peel and cloves, along with a faint strain of bretty funk, create a taste that is very dry, pleasing but dry. Hops add a faint bitterness that is very crisp. Green apples add to the tart dryness.

M: The mouthfeel is aggressive, very forward with its array of tastes. Not Allagash's best offering but a unique one nonetheless.

D: A decent ale. Nothing jumped out as spectacular but overall all the flavors came together nicely.

Enjoyed during my most recent visit to Ebenezer's in Lovell, ME.

Pours a slightly hazy but bright gold with a creamy one-finger off-white head that fades slowly to a sticky ring. Decent lacing.

Smell is mostly clove, yeast and orange peel.

Taste is much like the nose, with clove and yeast hitting the palate up front, before some mellow citrus flavors and a hint of grape and apple. Finishes dry with a slight hop bitterness.

Light to medium-bodied mouthfeel. Extremely crisp and refreshing.

A very drinkable, extremely enjoyable brew.

Draught @ BTAH.

Pours a hazy gold, white head.

Nose stays underneath; some yeast, bit of apricot, a bit grassy.

Taste is sweet up front, more apricot, but balanced from the beginning by the yeast and a fresh grassy hoppiness that carries just a hint of barnyard funk with it, coupled with a dry, light malt sweetness. Finish is interesting, bit yeasty and rich, with some sweet fruity esters, and a a lingering grassy bitterness that takes a bit to emerge after every sip. I even got a hint of white grapes later in the glass. Ever changing.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a sparkling carbonation. Aspects of a nice, crisp blonde and a saison, all with a bit more oomf. Fantastic. I have a soft spot for crisp, grassy, hoppy Belgians, so this one hit home for me.

Sampled on-tap at the Allagash night at American Flatbread in Burlington. The color of the beer was a cloudy, raw-honey/amber hue and the head was beige. The retention was good and the lacing off the collar nice. The aroma was slightly musty malt, citrus hops and wheat. Compared to the rather subtle aroma the flavors were huge! I tasted oak, vanilla, grapefruit, orange peel, spices, sugarcane sugar and pale malt. It was like a cognac in complexity with a pleasant sweetness that helped make it highly enjoyable. The finish was crisp and hoppy. The mouthfeel was smooth, the carbonation light and the body medium.
