From Maine, With Love #23 is a barrel-aged stout featuring locally roasted Ethiopia Guji Dimtu coffee from Speckled Ax, located right here in Portland. Around 1.25lb of coffee per barrel of beer, to be exact! Roasty, tasty, and coffee-y.

Look: Mostly standard for the style but I love how dark it looks and the head makes a nice neat ring around the glass
Smell: Coffee, bakers chocolate,
Taste: very strong bourbon flavor with baker's chocolate playing second fiddle and notes of coffee lingering in the background/aftertaste. Possibly a note that comes across like roasted barley as well?
Feel: decently lively and astringent with a velvety texture. Mouth feel makes drinking a small amount at a time very satisfying.
Overall: This is a super enjoyable bourbon stout and in my top 3 Maine with loves along with #18 and the rice Koji one.
The bourbon is super tastable and the coffee is noticeable too. The only thing I'm not picking up much from the label is vanilla and oak but it's still super good.

Not one of my favorites in the FMWL series. For a bourbon barrel aged stout - first off, I didn't get much of a bourbon or barrel presence. The look as it poured into the glass had a transparent nature to it which manifested into a thin and almost watery mouthfeel. Taste wise - it was bland but ok. There might have been some coffee, but not enough to really bill it as a coffee stout. Don’t get me wrong - it’s not “bad” per se - just not really what it was billed as and what I was expecting. I’ll try updating this review as maybe my taste (and visual) buds were off last night. Sorry Tod, I’m one of Allagash’s greatest fans and after years, I’m still trying to try everything you come up with, but I'm thinking this one might need a little more time in the barrels to really be billed as such, but eager to read others' opinions.
