Pour is beautiful. It's dark cola color - deep brown just short of black with plenty of reddish tinting. The head starts out a little rocky but ends up as a lasting layer of really tight foam. Said foam coats the glass luxuriously.
Not getting a ton of aroma. I do get a whiff of bourbon, some vanilla, roast, a bit of coffee and less chocolate. Straightforward and by the book.
The taste is very light and it is very nice but somewhat uninspiring. I'm ok with that - this wasn't a high priced Allagash offering, relatively speaking. Roast malt and coffee open the taste. There's some dark dried fruit leaning cherry. There's just a bit of chocolate. The barrel contribution is quite subtle on the actual bourbon taste, just a hint of vanilla sweet. There's mild char further on and the barrel announces itself with some spicy tannin/phenolic.
The feel is light but silky smooth and luxurious thanks to that creamy foam. Slightly dry. The char does build up a bit in the aftertaste. There's a bit of pepper coming in well after a few swallows.
Overall this is a perfectly fine stout. Very drinkable but the barrel impact is really laid back. Great look and mouth feel with good but pedestrian aroma and taste

750ml bottle poured into a chalice.
A: As deep brown as it gets before becoming black. Huge rocky beige head that just does not quit. Thick and chunky lacing.
S: A lot of grainy brown bread. Roasted barley and a freshly brewed pot of medium roast drip coffee. Nutty, bit of soot too. Tootsie rolls and bakers chocolate. Subtle clove cigarette sort of thing coming from some mild phenols. Some earthy hops. Barrel brings bourbon and faint whiffs of toasted coconut.
T: Quick molasses and brown bread in the early going, with some apparent grainy malt. Bakers chocolate. Roasted barley, nutty, coffee. Pine bark and earthy hops. The barrel shows more nuance in its flavor profile than it did on the nose. Marshmallow and vanilla, coconut shavings, bourbon. Mild clove. Smokey. Very dry. Bourbon, smoke, oak, and earthy hops on the finish.
M: Here the barrel aging makes another big contribution. Whipped, airy, marshmallowy, and silky smooth. Ample carbonation is fine-bubbled with a firm but gentle scrub. Amazing texture. Mild bourbon warmth.
O: Personally the base Allagash Black can get a little more bitter on bitter than I like, which in complete fairness is just how my palate responds to the style in general. Between roast, hops, and phenols it can wear on the drinkability. All that is largely mitigated by the barrel here though. The added dimension rounds it out better. The body and texture are exquisite too. It won't unseat Curieux as my favorite bourbon barrel Allagash offering, but it's good and it's a couple notches nicer than the base Black in my book.

From a corked, caged bottle dated 11/02/22. Sampled Jan 7, 2023
The appearance is about what one would expect with a dark brown look under a modest, fading tan head.
On the nose, I pick up basic dark roasted malts, Graham crackers, molasses and earth.
Medium or better mouthfeel.
The taste is sweet with dark malts and dry but generally speaking, it really was not very unique. I get little in the way of Bourbon aging. It's actually a nice stout but not as special as the labeling suggests.
