[skiz-uhm] a split or division between strongly opposed sections or parties, caused by differences in opinion or belief. How can something be black and pale? Cascadian Dark Ale? Or is it Black IPA? Let's let the others argue about it while we enjoy a beer. This beer is rich, dark, and hoppy. We call it good.
Malts: Prairie Two-Row, Munich Malt, Dextrine Malt, Carafa Special III, Chocolate Rye, Chocolate Malt
Hops: Chinook, Simcoe, Centennial, Altus Salvo

A - Pours out a largely opaque brown-black body, light tan head, fading pretty quickly to a pretty substantial sustained cap, and lots of clumps of small bubble lacing.

S - Robust roasted malt notes, toast and a bit of char, over a sharp hop bite, with vegetal and spicy notes.

T - Opens with the roasted malt, toasted dark bread, a middle that brings forward some dark chocolate highlights, but refocuses primarily on the pungent hop splash, mostly a grassy, pine bitterness that lingers through the close. An herbal aspect of basil and licorice tickles through the bitterness in the finish.

M - Moderate weight, decent carbonation, and a very dry close. A bit of resin build over time.

O - I am a huge fan of good Black IPAs, and this one is pretty tasty. It mingles IPA hops with roasted malts of a porter in a lovely mélange. I wish this style were more prevalent, because it scratches an itch. I'll pick this one again when I see it.

16oz can. Poured out a pitch black color with a small, khaki-colored head of foam. It left sticky rings of lace. It smelled of pine, roasted malt, toffee and chocolate. Sweet chocolate, toffee and roasted malt with a piney bitterness.

16oz can. Bottom date stamp is 'CANNED 11/22/2024'.
Dark brown colored body, with a wide mahogany back lit edge. One finger of light tan head, and this has duration. Leaves behind extensive lacing webs.
Aroma of chocolate, caramel, citrus and pine.
Taste has considerable pine resin, which is sweet at first and then gets dry and bitter. The other main flavor is sweet chocolate. Also caramel and juicy citrus. Bitterness level is high, and this extends into the long aftertaste.
Medium mouthfeel. Dry and tight finish. Produces significant tongue numbness. Very good carbonation.
This Black IPA emphasizes the pine resin, but not totally out of balance with the caramel, chocolate, and citrus.
