Sophistry 09

Look: Very hazy light yellow. Even with a careful pour, a gigantic 4 fingers of foamy white head with extremely long retention.

Smell: Strong resinous hops, almost like smelling pure hops. Almost no detectable malt.

Taste: Like the nose, resinous and citrusy hops. Mild floral taste and similarly mild bitterness that briefly lingers, with a sweet and faint finish.

Mouthfeel: Full and creamy, with mild carbonation.

Overall: A nice, complex IPA without an overpowering bitterness.

Very solid IPA, enjoyable to the last sip. Quite hoppy, and with a very nice balancing bitterness - if not quite West Coast in character. Crisp and drinkable.

16 oz can, 10/24/19
Tulip glass.

Hazy bright yellow with a creamy head of 2 fingers, leaving fuzzy lace on the glass in sheets and rings.

Aroma is citrus - namely grapefruit, orange, and pineapple, with some orange juice, slight grass and peppermint. Grapefruit comes around again in full swing.

Flavor is acidic and juicy, lots of orange flesh and pith, some grapefruit rind, grass, slight bitter pineapple, and pine. Finish of grass and ruby red grapefruit.

Feel is acidic as well, nice and juicy, with a good biting acidic soaking finish. Minimal warming alcohol.

Overall, a very decent IPA that hits some really nice markers. Price considered ($16/ 4 pack) there are better beers to be had for the price, but this is still worth checking out if you can snag a can.

Appearance: Pours a pale golden color with a moderate white, creamy head. SRM of 7. (3.75)

Aroma: Strong aromas of pineapple and cream with a touch of grapefruit citrus and pith. Slight pine and pithiness underneath. Lots of cream (4.00)

Flavor: Strong flavors of pineapple and cream. A touch of orange juice citrus and pith. Tastes very much like a tropical drink. Pineapple with cream mixed drink. Finishes slightly sweet as expected. (4.25)

Feel: Medium bodied but creamy and smooth. Feels like a milkshake sort of. Decent carbonation. Finishes creamy, smooth, and slightly sweet, but not syrupy. Has enough air to finish smooth and inviting another sip. (4.50)

Overall: Actually one of the better NEIPAs I've had. Not too fruity. Very milky and I would almost classify this as a milkshake IPA. The sugar content is probably up there, however it's done just right. Incredibly drinkable and smooth.... Dangerously smooth. This one could get you into trouble. A shining light amidst the haze craze. (Final Rating: 4.25)

Pours a slightly hazy medium bold with a nice foamy head, decent retention and good lacing.

The aroma is funky and fresh. Grassy and citrus hops with some vegetal/chive notes. Some floral aspects. Just a hint of tropical fruit.

The flavor flips the script and delivers light tropical notes on the tip of the tongue, with the grass, dank floral, and earth hops arriving in midstream. Just a touch of booze at the finish of the quaff. Skewed a bit sweet.

The brew is solidly medium, with decent carbonation, but seems a bit thin and flat compared with expectations.

Overall, a nice quirky IPA that skews a bit sweet, but delivers some nice dank herbal flavor.

I think this is one of the best IPA's I've had. Huge coconut flavor...additional tropical fruits of mango, papaya and pineapple but much more subtle....this is probably stretching it but a slight malibu rum like flavor overall.

Soft, smooth, creamy texture...not too sweet like some in this style....but also not a lot of hop dryness on the finish either...

Great example of this style and a flat out great beer.

I agree with gatornation that the can presentation if pleasing in it's simplicity. Well designed can. (the photo washes out the grey hue the background of the label).
New hop based beer from these folks is typically an enjoyable adventure.
Cloudy pour with a pale hay like color. Small and somewhat dense and very white cap.
Fruit aroma all around. Much tropical, but not all of it. Some northern light fruit too and a touch of citrus. Sweet and a little spicy with a bit if hop dust in the presentation.
Taste differs some from aroma. A bit of a bite up front and some excess hop character here. More herbal but still ample fruit. Feels thinner than I expected. Bitterness lays on the front of the tongue in addition to the sides. Not too much but present and noticeable. Plenty of carbonation. Probably too much for me as it's making me feel a bit bloated right away.
This is good and fine, but somehow not quite as satisfying as some of the others.

A juice bomb with a creamy finger head with nice retention and impressive lacing. Aroma is somewhat muted actually, dank with tropical notes. Taste is NOT muted: resin, mangoes, oranges, pine. Goes down crazy smooth, moderate carbonation, very little bitterness.

This stuff is legit. I had Barrel Theory pegged as Minnesota's premier haze-makers but Sophistry has all the boxes checked.

This beer pours a hazy golden orange with a moderate head. The aroma feral and piney, with dried pine, cat pee, ammonia, underripe melon, and skunky cannabis. The flavor is more lush, with lots of cannabis and pine, as well as overripe mango, grapefruit pith, and cedar. the mouthfeel is light with spring, bright carbonation. Overall a tremendous beer, with so much earthy, weedy, piney skunk. It is rather unique in the beer landscape today, and all the better for it.

I like the simplicity of the label on this one. It pours a semi hazed golden color. Smell has a floral ,fruity ,citrus with some lemon grass. Taste follows nose with loads of fruit ,citrus and grapefruit ,mixed in is some stone and passion fruit, spritzes of lemon also. Mouth feel was crisp with some dankness and bitterness, sweetness on the low side. Loved that this IPA was not overly sweet and still fruity/floral with hops.
