Poured from a growler can into a Nonic pint glass.
Pours nearly black, dark-brown, and opaque with an excellent three or four-fingered tan foamy head. Excellent retention.
Faint aromas of smoke join the also expected coffee, chocolate, general roasted malt and dark fruit and sugar.
The flavor follows the nose. Strong semi-sweet chocolate and bitter chocolate on the tip of the tongue. The smoke really arrives in midstream, and opens up more and more as the brew warms. At the finish, there is some judicious earthy hopping and a bit of booze, as well as a touch of salty brine.
The brew is beyond medium-bodied but not heavy or sticky. Well carbonated, it finishes with a bit of drying character.
Overall, it's noticeably smoky and that's welcome, but it's not distinctive that way. Still tasty, and pleasingly bitter instead of sweet.
