Poured from a can into a snifter
Appearance – The beer pours a deep black color with a one finger head of tan colored foam. The head has a great level of retention, very slowly fading over time, with it leaving a touch of streaky lace on the sides of the glass. Upon swirling in the glass thick fingers of beer cling to the sides of the glass, with them slowly falling back to the bottom of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is massive of a nice roasty aroma mixed with tons of coffee and chocolate as well as a big bourbon smell. Along with these aromas comes a good showing of some aromas of vanilla and a whole lot of molasses. At the same time, there is also a little bit of a coconut smell, mixing with the rest to give a very sweet and rich chocolate bourbon aroma overall. Delicious!!
Taste – The taste begins as one may have anticipated from the nose. The flavors upfront are huge of a roasted malt flavor mixed with a ton of milk chocolate. At the same time there is also a big showing of sweetness, with the sweet flavors being a mix of caramel and molasse, as well a little bit of a raisin and prune fruitiness. While largely absent upfront, flavors of bourbon and oak, as well as some coconut soon join the flavor profile, growing stronger and stronger as the taste advances forward. Toward the end, the bourdon and coconut really ramp up, and with a slight increase in the sweetness due to more molasses at the expense of some roast, one is left with a sweet and robust, warming, but very balanced taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is super thick and chewy with a carbonation level that is on the slightly lower side. For the style of the brew, the big roastiness, the big sweetness, and nice bourbon tastes, the feel of the brew is fantastic, and makes this one a very nice slow sipper.
Overall – A fantastic imperial stout!! Roasted, sweet, bourbon, and big, but in no way cloying or overbearing. Instead it is big and balanced, making for a very delicious, clean, and robust sipper of a brew.
