Appearance: Deep amber brown, verging on black, with scant ruby highlights, even before a strong light. The head, cream-colored, small and fine-beaded at the pour, soon collapses to a dusting of foam on the surface and a fine-beaded, dense ring about the glass wall.
Aroma: Strong notes of pumpkin pie spices, cloves and cinnamon in particular, as well as brown sugar and dark caramel, dominate the aroma. There are mild oak notes, too, but in view of the spices, and sugar, these seem restrained. There is a spicy note from the alcohol, though there is no heat or "booziness" that one might associate with a high ABV beer. There is a comparatively mild note of herbal hops, but this seems a mere afterthought.
Taste: Upon tasting, a wave of brown sugar and pumpkin pie spices, particularly cinnamon and cloves, greets the senses. The alcohol, while certainly quite prominent at 14.9%, offers the only hints of its presence in its gracious warmth and spiciness, there are no off-flavors or unpleasant intrusions. Later in the taste, some burnt sugar and dark caramel present. As the taste draws to a close, notes of wood and earthy hops appear, with a surge of molasses. Finishes with a lingering note of earthy hops and burnt sugar.
Mouthfeel: Staggeringly rich and full, with a consistency of whole milk. The carbonation is mild and restrained.
Drinkability/notes: Definitely a "one and done" beer, daunting in its magnificence. Surely a fine choice for Halloween 2022.
Presentation: Packaged in a standard twelve-ounce aluminum can, served in a La Fin du Monde tulip.
