Growler from brewery, drank night of purchasing:
This is the BA version of this beer, not sure if that is what Nocturnal is, or if it's a variant.
Pours dark enough to not let light through, even at the edges. head is a bark brown, grows and fades. medium to thin rim of this froth is all that lasts once the drinking starts, save for a smattering of transient lacing.
The nose is in between coffee and cocoa. There's a roasty note, but its smoothed out by a vanilla note that brings with it a chocolate impression. Chocolate, vanilla, and maybe even a little minty (weak and subdued) note that is likely the alcohol making its presence known.
The taste follows along, though in the end it give the impression of an after dinner spiked coffee treat. I'm not sure what else you can expect. There's a lingering caramel note in there that gives a light impression of a candy bar - but the coffee sticks as a reminder of the beer I am drinking. Definitely leans to the sweet, with the barrel aging maybe adding a certain vanilla sweetness to the roasty malts and coffee addition. In the end, though, both coffee and roasted malts are recognized.
A nice creamy beer that has a little pillowy nature to it. Fairly bold, but with a medium to slightly heavier body. Just an enjoyable beer all around. I'd be interested in trying Plasticene on coffee relative to this, because I feel I enjoyed them both about as much.
