On tap at brewery:
Listed as a "smoky red ale" at brewery.
Pours a deep rusty color, clarity seems on the hazy side. Head has a rust tint as well, but is near white. Lasting head with lacing.
Nose has a weird vibe to it that took me a little to figure out, but I'm going with what we called Lebanon bologna (lightly smoked salami maybe for others). This is from the smoke, and is joined mid taste (and with a deeper whiff) by a floral chocolate note. Not sure how that comes about, or that it's the best description, but I do get it occasionally with a hoppy red.
Taste starts off the bat with a minerally red with a dose of grassy to piney hops, which combines to yield that hint of chocolate whatever-it-is in the taste. Full flavored but relatively light - medium or so in heft. The smoke isn't powerful at all when cold. What I do get seems to blend with and amplify the bitter notes, even as it warms and becomes more obvious. The light, almost unassuming smoke smell adds a charred note to the bitterness as I get into the beer.
Not being a fan of most hoppy reds/ambers, this really didn't work for me. I felt maybe the smoke would play a different or bigger role - it leaned that way in the smell. But alas, not one I need to revisit.
