On tap at brewery:
Lightly burnished matte gold, with a moderate haze I don’t expect in this style. Head production is pretty solid, though, including the remnants that form a Halloween scene in silhouette.
Nose is very malty, with a pretty large component of spent grain. This wet grain note isn’t sweet, and almost makes it to fresh multi-grain bread. This “spent” part of the malts seems aided by a slightly sulphuric herbal hop component.
This beer is soft due to light carbonation, but has a little more heft in body than the light lager feel I expect. The sulphur note still sneaks in the taste, but is better hidden behind the bread and herbal (including chive and maybe a hint of green onion) notes. The hops play a bigger role than I’ve noticed in other Helles, but I assume the batch is fairly fresh.
Not a typical Helles, to my mind, given the extra, somewhat more American IPA hop profile. That said, it’d be a bit better without the slight sulphur notes, even though it’s not a bad beer with them.
