Special New Year brew, probably a Russian Interpretation of Scandinavian Christmas brews.
Color reddish-amber, high carbonation, huge off-white head dissipates quickly, proper lace.
Smell malty with a faint touch of honey and spices (liqorice?).
Start mild, malty, sweetish, stronger and more pleasant taste in the middle, metallic bitterness in the finish. Body medium, rounded. Mouthfeel a bit prickly from the carbonation, rather smooth towards finish.
Not a bad beer but certanly not my type. Worth a try, though.

Yarpivo is brewed in Yaroslavl, less than an hour's drive from Moscow. Imagine my surprise, therefore, in finding this beer - never seen in Moscow - while on a business trip to Perm, in the Ural mountains some 1000 kilometers (600 miles) from Moscow. The can is blue, with lots of fern like brush strokes and the image of a one-horse open sleigh. The words "pivo" and "beer" chase each other around both ends of the can, and the basic information is presented in both Russian and English. Ingredients conform to the purity law. Best before 6/21/04, I opened it on 3/7/04.

The mouth is very carbonated, light and slightly sweet. The opening is bland, wiht just a touch of malt. The finish features a somewhat harsh metallic bitter. The can says this beer is special due to the special malt and hops, and a unique recipe. I was quite disappointed.
