Beautiful label, strong golden color, medium carbonation level, modest head and plenty of lace.
Aroma malty with a light touch of yeast.
Start fresh, gentle, on the malty side, body big and rounded, mouthfeel very smooth, almost oily. Delightful interplay of malts and fruit with no extra sweetness. Light bitterness in the finish, superb long grainy aftertaste.
Very fine Dort, recommended!

Brewed under license from the Finnish Sinebrychoff brewery, I found this can in one of Moscow's mega-supermarkets. Gold, white and red, with a big imperial double eagle symbol above the banner bearing the name. All of the information was in Russian and English. Old Nikolai was apparently a Russian who established the first brewery in Finland while that country was a Russian province in the 19th century. Ingredients conform to the purity law. Best before 3/25/05, I opened it on 9/5/04.
Poured a clear, slightly orange gold under a one finger white head that was very short-lived. The nose is slightly sweet, grainy malt. The mouth is light and very prickly. We start with a smooth and very malty opening, slightly bready and just a tad sweet. There is no hops sensation to back this up, just lots of tasty malt. A one-sided brew, but actually quite pleasant. A nice surprise.
