Winter Porter
(aka "Winter's Nip", winter seasonal)
@ Ragtime Taproom & Brewery
American Porter (a sweeeter version for sure)
Reviewed on tap, 1/29/2010, "cheater" pint glass
Rumored as 7.8% from the bartender Jeanette. I would bank on at least 7, as they do have a kick as confirmed by me & the wife.
This is my second year of trying this seasonal. It is a bit sweeter than I remember. I had several of these today as it was on special for $1.50 a pint (they are trying to kick the keg to put on the new seasonal amber). I enjoyed this one very much this year, more than last. I did fine it to be almost a bit to sweet after the second brew, I enjoyed 3, but could not have had another. I felt the urge to switch to the Pale Ale to balance the sweetness with some hop bite.
Appearance is toffee brown with a red amber hue shining through in the light. Head formed and stayed around nicely. Actual lace was present throughout beer.
Smell and taste is roasted malts, dark caramel malts, molasses, maple and brown sugar. Hops are not front stage, but they do provide some support to avoid any cloying punch out the gate. I actually enjoyed this one more than most porters to date.
Mouthfeel was mdeium body, but a bit lighter than most porters. Carbonation was medium, lower than most Ragtime brews from what I remember.
Drinkability was pretty high @ $1.50. I could not have more thna 2 of these though, as they get progressively sweeter.

Its great to see a Porter on special. This was served in a 16 oz dimpled glass. The beer is dark brown with a beige head. Hard to tell about the lacing with these dimpled mugs.
It has a nice aroma of brown sugar burnt oats and molasses.
Nice combination of sweet and biter. It is slightly smoky with some chocolate undertones. The brown sugar taste emerges later and some charred malts add to the enjoyment.
The mouth could be beefed-up a bit, but the slight thinness makes it easy to drink several.
Note that I also heard this beer called Santas Nip & Holiday Nip.
