Our Honey Dip Stout given the "Double Barrel" treatment and taken to an entirely new level. 50% aged in rye barrels, 50% aged in Woodford Reserve Bourbon barrels, then blended together just prior to kegging. All the identifiable flavors in Honey Dip Stout (vanilla, honey, oak) are softened and rounded by the aging process. The barrel aging adds a deep chocolate flavor, another layer of sweet richness, and subtle notes of bourbon. A soft mouthfeel adds another nuance to the complexity of this world class offering.

Taste is dominated by smooth whiskey; I really like the woodford barrels, which happen to lean more toward the whiskey flavor and less toward the oak or vanilla. The honey and aging process make it smooth, and impart some chocolate notes, but there is also a decent amount of alcohol warming, so be warned. It is more booze than sweet. It is well carbonated but the head quickly dissipates leaving no foam or lacing whatsoever. Color is dark brown with a slightly lighter hickory brown around the rim.

On tap at the brewery. Look is black with amber tinges, opaque. Smell is piles of bourbon barrel, sweet and oakey. Taste is very sweet forward, almost sugar candy, then a long hit of boozy bourbon, vanilla and oak. The sweet lingers on the palate. There is an awesome unique flavor element I can’t pin down that hangs on forever. Almost minty, but not menthol. Feel is a touch thin for a big beer, but lots of alcohol heat, which I like. Overall, this is a phenomenal beer. Might even deserve 5s all around, but maybe I am holding out for the perfection that doesn’t exist. You should go out of your way for this one if you like BBA stouts.
