A kiloton is "a unit of explosive power equivalent to 1,000 tons of TNT" and it's the measuring unit used to evaluate atomic and nuclear devices. In 1946, beginning with the detonation of a 21 kiloton device, the United States began nuclear testing at islands in the Pacific. These tests damaged the islands and much of their vegetation but "nature always finds a way" and the first element to prove its resilience and return was the coconut. Here we recognize that fastidious fruit by brewing an Imperial Dark Ale with so much toasted coconut that it literally explodes with coconut flavor. Being an Able Baker beer, however, that's simply not enough so we aged it in Woodford Reserve bourbon barrels and then rested it on cocoa nibs. The result is a sultry, boozy, brew with bold, upfront coconut, and reserved tinges of chocolate and cherrywood.

I got a tall boy can of this beer from the brewery whilst in Vegas for my long time friend's wedding. It poured an opaque dark amber with thim tan ring head that is not leaving much lace. The scent had coconut and dark chocolate notes with waifs of bourbon. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to sip with sweet dark chocolate malt base with coconut and bourbon presence. The mouthfeel was medium in body with good carbonation. Overall it is a solid beer.

A- This pours out of the cool can with the artwork, a dark brown, nearly black color and definitely looks to have some body to it. The head starts about one finger in thickness, and settles rather quick into a ring around the inside of my glass, and there are also three distinct "dots" that look like something found in an overhead of a crop circle picture! The coloration of the head is a deep caramel, almost burnt toffee shade, and the lacing it provides is fine yet sticky, clinging to the inside of my glass. The carbonation appears to be fine as well, and I'm guessing on the lower end of the spectrum, as I don't see too much in terms of bursting bubbles. A decent, smooth looking dark ale!

S- Oh this is very nice to the nostrils......the coconut is in fact heavy, and gives off a nice toasted aroma, and along with some vanilla, reminds me of those toasted coconut marshmallows. There are other noted smells, such as dark chocolate, coconut nougat, natural burnt sugars and bready roasted malts......another candy this could pose as would be the Bounty chocolate bar! The finish is rich, slightly boozy and just with a hint of hop freshness.

T- The flavors follow suit to the aromas rather well, and in particular, the Bounty chocolate bar takes precedence over the marshmallow, however, there is still some robust vanilla like qualities about it. Rich flavorful chocolate malt, perhaps some Vienna malt for the toastiness, and bourbon barrel sweet char. The alcohol becomes more prevalent on the palate than the aromas let on, but it is smooth. While this is all going on, the finish provides a slightly surprising blend of full toasty coconut flesh, yet with a clean zing that doesn't allow the flavors to linger for too long. Very nice!

M/O- The mouthfeel is, as the appearance suggested, the body is medium-full and the carbonation, while not super heavy, definitely is fine and there are plenty of bubbles that burst on my palate. I quite enjoy this and it is dessert like, but not so sweet that it is a hard to enjoy kind of overall flavor. It certainly doesn't need anything to pair with it, and while I like it a lot, the drinkability factor isn't the highest.....I suggest moving on after a pint. Had this on tap as well, and I think canned holds up just as well....another winner from the best brewery in Vegas!

On tap at Atomic Liquors in Las Vegas, NV.

This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a small head, and a bit of lacing.

This one smells like toasted coconut, roasted malt, dark chocolate, caramel, and oakiness.

This is really solid - definitely dessert like but not overwhelmingly sweet at all. The coconut melds with the dense dark chocolate notes, with some caramel and oaky barrel notes.

This is medium bodied, creamy, and all that boozy.

This is a really well done and well balanced barrel aged dark beer - nicely decadent but not overindulgent.

16oz can picked up at the brewery on 10/25/2024

A strong dark ale with a ton of coconut, then aged in bourbon barrels.

Thin body, no head, but packs some heat. Coconut is very present and the bourbon is fairly faint. Very tasty and a slow sipper brew. Perfect for a fall night

16oz can. Can bottom is stamped '10/20/22'.
Black colored body with wider mahogany back lit edge. Beige colored head retreats to an active surface and a ring. Only a couple of scattered spots of lacing are left behind.
Aroma is roasted chocolate malts soaked in bourbon barrels, with a sweeter smell of coconut.
Taste is sweet with coconut, and vanilla from the bourbon barrel. Long lasting coconut flavor joins the chocolate roasted malts. Whiff of cherry at the end. Bourbon cherry, chocolate and coconut extend into the aftertaste.
Thicker mouth feel with stickiness on the lips. Higher ABV% is well hidden. Supportive carbonation.
Kudos for the flavor of coconut joining all the way through with the chocolate and the bourbon. Ending treat of a cherry on top.
