a very tasty coffee porter made and canned for craft brewers conference this year, done as a collaboration between a bunch of nevada breweries and their state craft brewers association or guild or whatever, but i believe this may have actually been produced at able baker, someone correct me if i am wrong. i like the recipe a lot, a robust type porter with a lot of roast and character, but then lower in abv, and packed with quality coffee, fairly darkly roasted itself it seems to me, smooth and drinkable, wintery and hearty, very well crafted by all the folks involved. darn near black with a frothed up inch of tan foam, high shine, looks great in the glass. the coffee and the roast together define the aroma, pushing to near burnt depth, and some bitterness comes out, but its not acrid or overdone, and there is room for molasses and toffee notes in the center without it being sweet. the coffee kicks off chocolate, smoke, and pipe tobacco notes, and maybe trace vanilla, lots of depth and nuance to this, the coffee is really bold. that is true in the flavor too, dark chocolate, good espresso, raisin, dark volcanic soil, some middle sweetness real quick but dry at the end, a slight english thing to the grain, a lovely textural smoothness, and its almost crazy how low the alcohol is but how robust this is overall. awesome beer, love the intense coffee, the construction around it, and the majorly inclusive spirit of collaboration that seems to have brought this about. cool project, really dug the beer!
