Appears dark orange/light brown, cloudy. Smell is average as average gets in this category. Nothing special. Mouth was the same, with a little thicker texture but not enough to rank it better.

Taste was good for the style. Malts made dark like a dunkel, just like the Christian Moerlein I tried. Nice alcoholic end with a full body.

*shrug* It's good. It's something I might buy again but the style is not my fave and there are plenty other beers....but you like Dunkels, this is a good example.

I didn't quite notice the year of this OId Dominion Summer brew but it's better than a Kristal Weizen in my opinion, so things worked out. Appears a ciderish cloudy banana about to turn tone forms a quickly disipating head leaves absolutely no lacing around my glass. Aroma has bready banana with a nutty toastiness, some creamy vanilla tones and a hint of herbal citrus notes. Taste...touch of alcohol with a tart character mild citrus light herbal hops heavy yeast brings on a doughy character with banana and caramel syrup finish. Mouthfeel is light to medium body low carbonation definitely not characteristic for the style but hey it's a year old and still holding up very well, slightly sticky textured. Drinkability...age is identifiable but still quite drinkable nice dunkelweizen wish I could have had it a bit fresher still not bad at all.

I guess this Old Dominion is a real brewer but I had never seen anything from them back on the island. Picked up this single at Belmont Party Supply in Dayton, Ohio on the discount rack this past weekend while in town for the basketball.
Pours a medium, cloudy brown into my pilsner glass with almost no head and an enormous wafting odor that features banana and clove but seems to be slightly off, perhaps this is why it was on sale.
Easy drinking texture with low carbonation but lots of dunkel taste. Slightly astringent in the aftertaste but otherwise not too bad. Still, I'd have to say something, perhaps authenticity, is missing from this dunkel. I'll probably go for Franiskaner or Paulaner over this among German dark wheat ales.

Another great beer from the wonderful people at OD. They constantly put out really great stuff that keeps me buying their products. This one was no exception.

A - The body was a very cloudy amber and had a nice head attached to it.
S - The heavy malts first dominated the smell, but soon subsided to the strong fruity finish. What was great, was that even though both were quite strong in thier own way, they worked together nicely and didn't screw it up. They also were accompanied by a light peppery smell.
T - Taste was very similar to the smell. The only real difference, was that it was a bit stronger in the malty area. The pepperiness was also a bit more noticeable.
D - With all this going on, it made for a really easy beer to drink. Along with that, it was very refreshing as well.

12 Oz bottle Sampled through the efforts of Boxing Day BIF and Pentathlete. Bottling date is 08/09/05.

Poured in to my Paulaner Weissbier glass for proper sampling.

Pours a cloudy light brown to red colored beer with an OK tan head.

Smell is tart and lemony with a strong clove aroma and a lesser scent of wheat malt. Banana aroma is almost completely missing.

Taste is tart and smoky in the first sip with the taste of something I can't quite name. Spicy tart and smoky this is something like Aventinus milder mannered brother. After a while a Band-Aid like phenols show up in the after taste.

Mouthfeel is OK.

A definite tart German summer style wheat beer that reminds me a bit of Berliner Weiss. I will have to sample this again in the summer of 2006 to see if it is the thirst quencher it seems to be. The smoky tart combination makes it the perfect beer for German potato salad or sausages in kraut.

12 oz bottle.

Pours a murky orangy brown with a small, thin head that quickly disappears and leaves a slightly off white lace and collar.
Smell is pretty average. A bit of caramel, definite wheat, some breadiness. Nothing outstanding.
Taste is a bit thinner than I would have expected. Definte caramel, wheat, hops, some citrus and a very slight burnt character.
Mouthfeel is good, I personally prefer my wheat ales a bit more full-flavored than this, but it's not bad.
Overall, a good beer, something that I could definitely see drinking a few of on a hot day here in FL.

The beer poured into the glass hazy amber brown with practically no head at all.

The aroma was darkened caramel with a nice wheat and a light banana. Also present was a slight molasses aroma.

The flavor was some dark caramel with wheat and a light fruit flavor that had contained a slight bit of bananas. The beer was dry on the palate with a slight molasses and bready/biscuity flavor.

The finish was dry with just a slight lasting caramel and light fruit. The body was medium and the carbonation was crisp. No head at all on this one and not much flavor or aroma.

12 ounce bottle. Bottled on 050305.

Appears a murky dark caramel color with a 2 finger tan head that slowly fades into a thick film. Nice clusters of lacing stick around for a while before slowly gliding back into the collar.
Smell is of caramel, chocolate malts with a touch of fruit and some yeasty breadiness. Almost perfect of the style.
Taste is a lighter versioin of the wonderful aromas that is slightly sweet and bready with a touch of spice.
Mouthfeel is slightly thin but still medium bodied and finishing semi dry with a bit of caramel sweetness.

12oz bottle obtained via trade with meathookjones. Thanks for the opportunity...

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 3/4" beige head over the amber brew. Head is pillowy and lasting, with good lacing. Aroma is bready wheat, with some spiciness as well. Flavor is light toasted wheatiness, with a crisp, almost citrusy close. Seems a bit light for a dunkel here. Mouthfeel is smooth, easy, a bit watery seeming, coupled with amazing drinkability. As advertised, made for summer drinking...

Bottled 4/22/05

Pours a hazy copper with small head that quickly settles into some minimal lacing. Smells fruity.. not what I would expect from a dunkel weizen.. tastes slightly sour with a spicy warmth to it.. some caramel malt in the background. light to medium bodied, well balanced and goes down very smooth

A very interesting beer.. a very easy to drink summer offering. Worth a try if you have the opportunity but wouldn't go out of my way for it.

Purchased as a sixer to break in the new hammock. Bottled on 052705 clearly ink jetted on the label.
Poured a cloudy caramel with very little carbonation. Mini head formed with no retention or lacing, even after a rough pour.
Aroma of malts and some faint yeast esters
Flavor is predominantly chalky malt, with very faint spiceyness and applelike fruitiness. Very weak flavor overall, and doesn't really hold up to what I'm used to in the style category.
The body was weaker than to my liking, the chalky malts were just blah.
Drinkable in a "its hot, there cold" sort of way. I won't get another sixer, but I'll see what 2006 has to offer.

Old Dominion's Summer Wheat 2005 pours a cloudy, caramel-colored body with an orange-crimson cast beneath a short head of lightly yellowed off-white foam that drops readily and leaves very little, if any, lace about the glass.

The nose expresses some subtly tart and fruity yeast, and a lightly caramelish malt. There's really not that much there.

It's delicately crisp and mildly effervescent with a medium-light body and just slightly elevated carbonation.

The flavor is as the nose suggests, with yeasty fruitiness (basically just apple, but there are some background notes of banana floating around as well) and acidity dominating over a lightly caramelish maltiness. It's backed by a mild bitterness, and the acidity of the yeast helps to dry it in the lack-luster finish. It's well-balanced and easy to drink.... but boring and lacking in dark malt character.

Overall, ... it's disappointing. And that's weird because it's not like Old Dominion to drop the ball. I'm not sure what exactly it is, but it's not a dunkel weizen, and it's not a hefe-weizen.

This beer poured a fine cloudy brown with a bit of tan head. The aroma was of lightly toasted malt. The taste was of toasted malt and light fruit. The feel was medium bodied and a crisp finish. This was a nice change of pace for the evening, but I didn't see this up there with those I have topping my list. Pleasant, but a bit more toasting of the malt or other flavors would have really raised this one up. Currently it is available at Capitol City Brewing in Baltimore.

A- hazy brown with an off white head that disapears very quickly. im really dissapointed with the head, or lack there of with this beer. No matter how aggressively i pour it. After a few minutes theres aboslutely no signs of a head ever being there, might as well be tea.

S- strong malt and nutty presence with hints of sweetness

T- slight grainy taste with lots of nut, vanilla, malt and some roasted flavor.

M- light mouthfeel with a high amount of carbonation. somewhat watery.

D- easy drinking beer with no overly dominating flavors make this pretty high

overall i am kinda of dissapointed here. its not a bad beer, but its not great either. Its lacking in mouthfeel and taste. When compared to Weihenstephaner, old dominion isnt even in the picture.

Pours a cloudy dark amber with a nice off-white head.

Smell is sweet caramel, banana, spices, and a light citrus. Taste is very refreshing with tangy citrus, banana and and roasted malt. Mouthfeel is a touch thin, but not overly watery. Finish is very thirst quenching and refreshing. Perfect summer beer.

I love Old Dominion's past summer brews, and they are regulars in my fridge. This variation on the usual style is very welcomed. I will definitely be picking up more while it lasts.

Pored a cloudy amber-brown color with slightly off-white head. Smell is slightly sweet but also nutty. Taste is excellent. It seems as if the best characteristics of a weizen and a stout were combined. Nice mouthfeel. Very easy drinking. An all around excellent beer. A pleasant surprise.

The beer pours a cloudy brown color with a thick frothy offwhite head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It has a semi-sweet wheat and crystal malt scent with a slightly fruity aroma. It also has a metallic aroma that takes away from the maltiness. The taste is average. It has a toastey pale and roasted malt flavor with some wheat malt taste. It goes down easy with a dry slightly fruity finish. It's not as sweet and yeastey as some I've had. I'm not real fond of this variety. The mouthfeel is decent. It's a medium bodied beer with a little too much carbonation. This is an average Dunkle. It has a decent aroma and taste. I won't be buying this one again.

Not familiar with this genre, but this is one interesting wheat beer. First you notice the hue - a slightly murky, warm amber color. Head was 1/2" of mixed cream foam that faded quickly.

Nose is interesting, very interesting. Hard to pinpoint, but there is mild spiciness, some roasted aromas, then..ahh...crusty bread, yeast....very nice. I wasn't expecting something this deep and rich in a summer wheat.

Taste is very even, balanced, creamy, mildly rich, some caramel and unrefined sweetness showing. It finished now it started, clean, smooth, creamy, rich. This was very enjoyable.

I could easily see someone mistaking this for a more malted beer (various bocks come to mind), but yet its a wheat. Without question one of the most interesting wheat beers I have tried, and just a good beer in general. This one is a keeper and one to try before summer is gone.

12 oz bottle with bottling date of 5-03-05 stamped on the label. Pours a cloudy, coppery apricot body with a one finger beige head. Retention is fair, and some patch and sheet lacing is left on the glass. Aroma features clove and citrusy lemon notes, which give way to understated caramel, toasty wheat, yeast, and a hint of banana. Mouthfeel has spritzy carbonation and a light to light medium body. Taste is well balanced and refreshing. Caramel malt flavors weave well with the toasty wheat grain and doughty malt. Notes of yeast, clove, banana, lemon, and orange add a pleasant complexity.
Very well constructed summer seasonal. Nice balance, with surprising complexity for such an easy drinking dunkel weizen. Excellent as a quaffable summer beer.
