Southerleigh Heyyyy Joe Coffee IPA on tap from Big Hops in San Antonio, TX.
Appearance: beautiful deep dark color with a two-finger head.
Fragrance: quite pleasant and calming, just like a cup of fresh cup of coffee with slight notes of hops.
Taste: heavy and bold IPA taste up-front that immediately transforms into a robust roasted coffee flavor with a slight sting. The aftertaste is that same flavor with added bitterness that sticks in the back of the throat for many minutes.
Mouthfeel: moderate mouthfeel, more drinkable than expected from a coffee IPA.
Overall: I will definitely have this beer again, but I will probably not make a habit of it. This is a beer that would be great paired with a pastry or chocolate dessert. However, I would not want to have multiple glasses of this beer in a row, as the bitter lingering coffee taste is more dominant than the hop bitterness and assaults my throat, making me feel like I am drinking black coffee long after I am finished with the beer. Food helps remove the aftertaste.
