Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery "Coup De Hop Gruit"
on tap at the brewery, 2 November 2015
Notes: Very dark mahogany brown - almost black body beneath a frothy head of tan. I'd assume that in the time when gruits were brewed all beer would have been at least a little dark so that makes sense. The aroma expresses dark malt but it's rather non-descript. It's also, however, herbal and grassy with a note of sweetish anise - pleasant and welcoming! The flavor is surprisingly soft and supple with suggestions of caramel, chocolate, and roastiness in the malt without any of those really coming forward. The herbal spices are blended just as well with only something anise-like rising minority over a dampened herb blanket. Deftly balanced and remarkably drinkable.
