Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery "Smoke On The Water" Rye APA smoked w/ cherrywood
On tap at the brewery/restaurant on 2 November 2015
6.8% ABV, 39 IBUs
Appearance: Hazy gold with an orange cast. Frothy white head. Excellent retention and lacing.
Aroma: Mildly smoky. Very smooth smokiness but with a hint of bacon.
Flavor: The malt and smoke mix quite well, they're nicely intertwined rather than distinct in their own right. Odd wood... Hickory? (At this point I didn't know it was cherry wood, but it was clear to me that it wasn't beechwood). A little harsh upfront, smoother at the back - but unique! Fruitiness and some other phenolic a (I.e. Plastic) appear as it warms. A median bitterness is all that's needed.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a gently effervescent carbonation.
Overall: Quite interesting. The choice of wood makes it stand out, and it's well done. For fans of rauchbier this is one to seek out.
