Southerleigh brewery at the Pearl in San Antonio is doing some good things right now. I highly recommend checking out the facility and trying whatever funky style they might have on tap today. Stuff like the Darwinian IPA are regulars, and are great, but every now and then you get something called the Augustus Gloop Blueberry IPA and you aren't sure what to do. My advice, always give it a try. Without knowing anything else about this beer, I picked up a 5-gallon keg from their brewmaster, Les, and it has been fantastic.
Pours a dark brown, almost purple (?), color with reddish hues and decent head. It really does look kinda purplish when you hold it up to the light. Fun stuff. The nose is rich and malty, with dark fruits and berries. Not overwhelmingly blueberry-ish here, but very nice. The hops are present, but faint, almost as an afterthought. Which might seem odd for an IPA, but it works here. The taste is similar, with a bold fruity and malty presence. Rich and creamy and bready. But the hops kick in nicely in the end and really round things out.
This is a great beer. I've had some really good and just okay beers from Southerleigh so far, but this one is up near the top of their inventory as far as I'm concerned. And as long as they keep pushing the envelope, I'll keep coming back for more. Cheers.
