Poured from a growler into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a clear golden amber color with a one finger head of puffy white foam. The head has a good level of retention, fading over time and leaving a good sum of foamy.
Smell -The aroma of the brew is strong of citrus smell, with tons of grapefruit hop and some notes of tangerine and orange sweetness. There is also a rather decent showing of a pine smell mixed with some notes of lemon and a bit of cracker malt. Overall, very proper for the west coast IPA nature of the brew.
Taste – The taste begins with a cracker malt mixed with a bit of breadiness. Right from the start the grapefruit is quite strong, with a big showing of white grapefruit flash, mixed with a bitter grapefruit peel flavor. There is a bit of the tangerine and orange that were in the nose, but these are on the lighter side. A light tropical fruit is there as well, with it later fading on the tongue, along with the sweeter citrus fades some as well. While the sweet citrus fades, the grapefruit intensifies, bringing forth more bitterness. Toward the end a touch of pine joins in, and with the big grapefruit flavors, one is left with a nice grapefruit bitter, but smooth taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is rather middle of the road in thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is moderate. Overall, the feel was rather nice for the very bitter grapefruit flavors and the moderately high abv. making for a nice sipper overall.
Overall – A very enjoyable and heavy grapefruit flavored West Coast IPA. I hop they keep this one as a regular, as its probably my favorite of the IPA’s I have had by them. Rather top notch.
