Holy whisky spice Batman! Looks like bourbon, smells like bourbon, tastes like bourbon, feels like bourbon- the review could easily stop right there. The slightly wild and amber ale of Urban Artifact brewers takes a nice long slumber in bourbon barrels for a depth of complexity that all swirl around... you guessed it. Bourbon!
Hazy amber in color, the beer takes on a light bronze color before swirling with a fast collapse of foam. Bourbon spice, and the caramel, vanilla, pepper and coconut that accompany it, swirl about the nose along with light honey, caramel and toasty malts that lie within. Honey, cola and the slightness of bread crust and pecan try to vie for the tastebud's attention, but the malty contributions are of honey sweetness and booze.
Across the middle palate, the bourbon influence continues to grow, bringing all those coconut, vanilla, cherry, oak and caramel flavors to prominence. A slight aspects of cola, nuttiness and toast resonate softly behind the bourbon while a soft earthen tang of spontaneous fementae to play out gently on the finish. Pepper, musk, woodsy bitterness and seemingly rye continue a short and succinct after palate.
Malty dry and medium full, the beer's body is sweet but never overly rich or cloying. Dominated by bourbon spice, the finish is hot, moderately fusal and laden with oak tannin, peppercorn and the piquant tang of rose wine. Somewhat of a Mint Julep kind of taste, the sipping beer would find favor with all things Asian five spice recipes.

500 ml bottle, aged in first use oak bourbon barrels (2016), 9.1% ABV. Served in a snifter, the beer pours a reddish/brown color with almost an inch off-white head. Head retention and lacing are both decent enough. The brew smells like bourbon, vanilla, caramel, bready/grainy malt, earthiness and a bit of stone fruit. Taste is pretty similar to the aroma, with dried fruit, earthy, bready/grainy malt, caramel, bourbon, funk, brown sugar and vanilla flavors. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's slick and smooth with a moderate amount of carbonation. It's sweet, a bit tart and a good overall brew. Glad I picked up this one a few weeks ago. I'd like to try this one again along with the variants someday. $14.99 a bottle.
