Pours black as pitch, topped with a dark tan head. Nice lacing as the head falls. So far so good.
Big, roasted malt profile on the nose. Rich, bittersweet, and with dark fruit character. Everything I like in the style.
Sweet and rich, just as the nose gave good warning of, and quite smooth across the tongue and palate. Proper level of carbonation moves the bitter/sweet, dark-skinned fruity flavors around the palate. Bitterness seems restrained, but it works well with the gently warming alcohol level. Body is a bit thinner than I'd thought it might be, given the look of the pour.
Good mouthfeel overall, and excellent drinkability for the style. The overall flavor profile and drinkability reminds me quite a bit of Expedition Stout from Bell's, which has long been a favorite of mine in this style.
Altogether this one is average to better-than average for the style, and is worth a shot if this happens to be a style you enjoy (as I myself often do). I reckon they will throw this in a barrel at some point and bump the booze up to some silly level of hotness, but as it is Sarlock is solid offering for the style, and a great beer from 56 Brewing.
Notes:
1. This one's new to me. Bottom of the can reads: "1-29-18 Winter Warrior" so it's pretty fresh, eh?
2. I rate to-style and have rated thousands of beers, so "better than average" = "worth trying" to my mind.
