Californicator is all about West Coast USA and West Coast USA is all about the hops. The hops bring a firm bitterness as well as aromas of citrus, pine and apricot. A simple but full malt bill brings increased alcohol and a honey like sweetness for balance. The result is a beer that brings huge flavour and a balance that makes it very moreish.

On-draught @ the brewery:
Saccharine for an IPA, but I guess the sweetness helps disguise the ABV pretty well. Can't say its hop profile is anything special.

Smell - Orange, passionfruit, apricot, and guava; a tropical, syrupy cocktail on the nose. Plenty of hop resin.
Appearance - pours an amber-tinted 2 finger head, deep amber clear colour, and little effervesence. The head dissipates to nothing quickly.
Taste - Follows the nose, with an added and healthy dose of bitterness. Lemon zest dominates, a hint of finger lime, and kaffir leaf. Peppery bite softened by a hint of orange sweetness to finish. All of this is against a wall of shortbread malt, so it's not just a big bitter herbal bomb, but balanced and full bodied. More herbal than the fruit cocktail the nose suggests. Slightly harsh mid-body where it's hugely hop dominated.
Mouthfeel - A zapping sensation on the tongue, good oil but slightly thin. It is a challenging brew however - big flavour, but it means it's a heavy one, fizzier than the sight would suggest, and leaves a lingering bitterness and a slight puckering sensation. Drink slowly.
Overall - A flavorful brew and one for those who like it bitter, but you have to work for your flavour. Wouldn't have more than one in a session as good as it can be.
