If poplar is good enough for the Mona Lisa, we figured it'd make a pretty good canvas for Goodwood Pale Ale. Aged on poplar and brewed with American hop varietals, this floral, hoppy masterpiece finishes with a pleasingly sweet, malty backbone that's sure to attract "poplar demand."

I'm not going to BS you with "it has a floral taste" because no beer does nor should. I don't know who these folks are that eat flowers and grass or even know what they taste like are.

A: Pours a clear, dark amber with a thick, bubbly off-white head that makes a point of sticking around for some time.
S: Aromas of lemon, kumquat, bitter orange, grass, herbs, and grapefruit are balanced by minerals, caramel, biscuit, crackers, and a dry, somewhat earthy woodiness.
T: Bitter and pungent on the entry, displaying huge notes of grapefruit, lemon, kumquat, bitter orange, grass, herbs, and perhaps a bit of pomelo and lime, this ale is quickly balanced by somewhat dry notes of biscuit, crackers, wood, and minerals, with just a hint of caramel sweetness. The finish is bitter and woody, offering an odd, yet pleasant mix of tart citrus, minerals, crackers, and woody spiciness from the poplar aging.
M: On the lighter side of medium in terms of body, and initially slick, though it dries out quickly, this ale displays an airy, active carbonation. This is very easy to drink, though I tend to prefer that my American pale ales display a slightly thicker body.
O: For the most part this is a very solid American pale ale. I think a few minor tweaks could make it better, but as is, this is still good. I particularly appreciate the unique hop presence on the nose and in the mouth, as well as the use of poplar as opposed to oak for aging.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass. Bottled on date not notched.
Deep amber body color, close to orange but more in the red to bronze hue, with very good clarity, almost crystal clear and fine rising carbonation. Head creation is soapy but with good retention. Head makes an easy three fingers with island puck retention and a big top. Traced laces of pill and ring like lace leave the glass. Very good looking pale ale.
Aroma manages the basics. Solid soft caramel with a toasty brown bread note. Slight nutty character but also some nice cream. A bit of indistinct hops maybe floral? But not really expecting hop forward quality. Not sure of the poplar angle here, but doesn't come off hinting of wood finishing. Either way it's very nice though.
Palate showcases a little bit differently than the aroma. Good bitterness of hop but also accentuated by woody mid palate tannic dry tones. Starts off with a bit of caramel sweetness, but also washes a little wet and finishing with very tight bitterness. There's a good numbing of the palate going on here, nearly metallic but then gets into a novocaine phenol like feeling a bit, and an almost green beer like quality. Kind of a varnish like quality to this but tolerable.
Interesting how the wood affected this. Mostly brought out some different bitterness in a slightly jarring way.
