Review from notes taken on 7/3/10.

This brew pours a dark brown color with reddish hues around the edges. There was little to no head formation when the pint was served but what was evident when swirled appeared as an offwhite to slightly brownish color of bubbles. Spotty faint lacing stuck to the glassware.

Aroma consisted of slight dark grain character in the nose with some alcohol and sweetness akin to dark fruit like plum or raisin more so than malt.

The taste was malty like extract with some sweetness and a minor tingle of alcohol. Lasting flavor of sticky sweetness is left inside the mouth that doesnt quite resemble much of anything. As the brew warmed, it started to smell a bit like coffee.

Little to no carbonation with this offering. It has a very light feel and somehow maintains fairly decent drinkability for something that was lacking flavor...it just went down smooth.

This seems to be a new offering at the KBC - I'm guessing winter release, as I didn't see it back in the fall and it isn't on this site. Poured into a pint glass, 20oz serving. Uncertain abv, I'd guess below 5%.

Appearance is dark opaque black, no light shining through. Ruby purplish accents. No head, offwhite collar and small cloud.

Aromas of black licorice, maple syrup, diacetyl. Little hop aromas.

Remarkably full-bodied, but that might be from the carbonation. A little fizzy. Medium toasted malt backbone on this one, more licorice, apple vinegar, citrus, substantial caramel and bready malt in the background too. Finish is on the quick side, with wine gumminess. Easy drinking for sure and a nice winter beer.
