I was awaiting the moment I would try this beast. That could only be a great beer. A collaboration between the best English brewers and the best French brewer. An impressive 12% ABV beer fermented with champagne yeast and saison yeast. Hopped with new Zealand hops as Nelson Sauvin.
The hazy peach body would tell you, yeah that actually might be a saison, the absence of head reminds you this is neither a saison nor a bière brute.
The smell is main attribute of this beer. It's very very fruity. Stone fruits, tropical fruits. But also floral.
The taste hits you hard and tell you, yeah yeah, that's an 12% ABV beer you're having. The booze is all.over the place. The fruity esters (stone fruits) are present too but quickly with some strange semi-tart/semi-astringent/ champagne-like acridity. Too bad that doesn't remind me the best champagne wines I've had. All in all the taste is quite messy.
The almost flat mouthfeel doesn't do anything too improve the taste.
Overall it's an odd beer but I'm glad I've had the chance to try it. Any ways that's one original beer and it's hard to put it in any category. It's between a tripel, a hoppy saison and a bière brute.
One pint can might be a bit much for one person. Try to share it. Though the can said drink fresh (with bbe may 17) the beer was more and more drinkable as it oxidized. I wonder if some aging might round it up.
